To hate net curtains?

We have recently moved house and our lounge overlooks a road. Dp wants to get net curtains, but I hate them and think they look like something my gran would have. Anyone else agree?

Horizontal blinds? Are you mad? Think of the dusting!

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff · 27/08/2012 11:50

*i love horizontal blinds - durr!

LST · 27/08/2012 11:52

I have the voily types with little squares on now and again and I love them. I don't like blinds myself as the cats would just get stuck in them...

Softlysoftly · 27/08/2012 11:55

Have you looked at sheer blinds? Let in the light but block the view and there are some lively ones.

EarnestDullard · 27/08/2012 12:13

We have horizontal blinds in our living room, and they are such a pain in the ass to dust. They only cost about £12 each from Argos, I'm almost tempted to replace them once a year rather than dust them Grin In fact we did replace them once as they got covered in plaster dust and that shit doesn't come off easily.

Plastic horizontal venetian blinds are nice. I have wooden downstairs and pladtic upstairs.

Sari material is nice for curtains using a rod.

SoleSource · 27/08/2012 12:16

I unvlipy blinds and.dip tjem in hot soapy water, shower off .leave gor a coue of hours outside and hang back up.

IvanaNap · 27/08/2012 14:08

Just to add - I don't think anyone has mentioned but only skimmed - it's not just the goldfish bowl effect and privacy; from a security point of view they are a good idea too.

I'm not saying it will stop you getting burgled, but they are recommended

Shutupanddrive · 27/08/2012 18:37

Good point ivananap love the NN by the way, not that we have anything much worth stealing

Hate nets and blind and wherever possible I use plants either in tubs outside or in the room by the window. They do cut some light but they add to the 'ambience' and do the job when the light is on in the room, unlike nets/voiles etc

IvanaHumpalot · 27/08/2012 21:30

Do you need to do anything just yet? give it a few weeks and see if your DH still thinks you need them, or if it stops being an issue. You could have voile or something that you draw aside if you need privacy, but it's not a bedroom or bathroom.

cosypenguins · 29/12/2015 20:58

hang the nets on a pole or rail AWAY from the window pane so it hangs. Use cotton only lace and not nylon. looks great

cosypenguins · 29/12/2015 21:04

net curtains can look wonderful if they are made of good quality fabric, 95% cotton is good. HANG them on a pole or rail of their own and do not have them on a wire line up against the window pane. If they are hung about 3 inches away from the pane, they will HANG properly, look good and they give you more privacy and also light.

cosypenguins · 29/12/2015 21:07

why do English houses not have sitting porches?

nooka · 29/12/2015 21:17

I don;'t get the winter reference. If it's dark and you have the lights on, don't you draw your curtains? I would have thought it was summer that was more problematic?

Havingafieldday · 29/12/2015 21:32

Nets are hideous. I have very thin voile roller blinds which are much neater and I often only keep them about 3/4 closed to let in a bit more light

LustyBusty · 29/12/2015 21:37

How about something like this - not quite "net curtains" still lets in loads of light but offers privacy? I had something vaguely similar when I lived in a first floor flat (granted not ground level) but on a high street with other flats opposite, it was great to see out knowing others couldn't see in!!

mineofuselessinformation · 29/12/2015 21:48

I don't like net curtains - I like as much light as possible in my house....
But, the front of my house is only four feet away from the pavement, so I have voile net curtains at my front windows. It's the lesser of two evils of people being able to see in (including into bedrooms), or having something there to give privacy in daylight hours.

Krampus · 29/12/2015 21:54

Our neighbours have some sort of reverse blind. There's a bar around 3/4 up the window and a plain blind material is fixed from there to the window bottom. It looks as if it would work well as it still lets light in.

After a quick google, it must be something like this

Krampus · 29/12/2015 22:03

cosypenguin bit of a random ponder there Grin but I agree and have discusses this with my husband.

I would love to redesign the back of our house to include a covered area. With the relatively mild climate and all the rain it would get used all the time.

rosewithoutthorns · 29/12/2015 22:05

I have a bay window on the ground floor I tried everything else and now have "half" voiles and curtains. They look fab.

CarlaJones · 29/12/2015 22:06

I've got wooden blinds but I like the idea of the stick on frosting instead.

EllieJayJay · 29/12/2015 22:09

I got my blinds from blinds2go brilliant and reasonably priced

In my kitchen that overlooks a main road I brought frosting stuff, allows enough light in without seeing other humans in the morning :)
