Does anyone have experience of reducing their hours and find they have more money? Although our in comings would be reduced could I balance this by reducing out outgoings?

My commute is over 12 hours a week, I rush around the shops never having time to look for bargains. I would save in transport costs and have time to look for things that would save the family money?

Depending on your salary you'll get a higher proportion of your salary after tax - I don't actually find much difference whether I work 3 or 4 days and after the cost of travelling and lunch it's definitey not worth doing the extra day.

It's definitely worth considering if you think you can save money elsewhere by being more efficient?

There's a salary calculator somewhere (on phone so can't get it just now) but google and it'll work out your net salary if you put in 80% hours.

YANBU. Going out to work, especially in a city centre environment where you need to be ultra suited and booted, is expensive. Unless you are on a very good salary or career progression, its hardly worth it these days, or so it seems!

I earn about £600 a months by working 2 night shifts in a nursing home just up the road and get to keep it all and don't earn enough to pay tax.

If i worked full time 9-5 i'd have to earn 1300 a month to have the same money as we'd have to pay childcare and run a second car etc.

It's always struck me as utter lunacy to work to just to pay childcare.

ValiumQueen · 27/08/2012 10:34

I think I would be, as less childcare and potentially more tax credits.

loveisalaserquest · 27/08/2012 10:35

A friend of mine dropped from full- to part- time recently and found she was £350 a month better off, without even factoring in childcare.

I went from working 5 days to 3, my MIL and DM looked after DD for 2 days (as they did when I worked full time) so I only had to pay 1 day childcare.

The reduction in the tax and childcare I paid meant that I was bringing home almost exactly the same as working 5 days and got to spend more time with DD.

It's madness!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 27/08/2012 10:43

Before children I once dropped my hours to work a 4 day week. Although I was working 20% less hours I definitely wasn't 20% worse off.

slipperandpjsmum · 27/08/2012 13:00

These posts are making me feel much more positive about working pt - thanks.

I have just worked out if I drop from 37.5 hrs per week to 25, over 5 days, taking into consideration childcare for three and tax credits, I would be £3000 better off, and that is worst case scenario. I just hope nursery and work will agree.

I've been wondering this too and Posted on the £40k not being a fortune thread

I really want to know how much you can earn and get the childcare bit of tax credits

I'm on £26k and Dp is on £19

We have two dc under 3 in nursery 4 days a week

We don't get and tax credits

We both have to commute 50 miles a day and at different times so have to run two cars

I would dearly love to reduce my hours and if it transpired that we'd not be much worse off I could spend more time with my children

ValiumQueen · 27/08/2012 14:50

Go to tax credit calculator and put a few figures through. It makes a difference how many children you have. Sorry cannot link on phone

Methe · 27/08/2012 14:52

We dont get any tax credits and our combined income is

ValiumQueen · 27/08/2012 16:22

Childcare element depends on income, number of kids, and childcare costs. The HMRC website has details.

ValiumQueen · 27/08/2012 16:22

It is only 26K if you just have one kid.
