To be worried about my periods?

I was on the Depo injection for 9 months and came off it over 5 months ago. I haven't had a period. I know it can take a while to return to normal but it's really unnerving me. Although DP and I use condoms every time I keep buying the £1 pregnancy tests every six weeks to 'make sure'.

Any experiences?

Yup - took about that long to come back for me. I wouldn't worry but take other preventatives (coil/pill etc) as you clearly don't seem to want to get pg. If you DO, then opt for Cerazette Wink was on that for 6 months after DD and fell pg after decades of being careful on the depo!

Definitely don't want to get pregnant. Circumstances dictate we absolutely don't right now. The Depo was making me crazy though. Will look in to getting a coil instead but loved the no periods on Depo. Funny how the thing you liked now worries you.

Yes, actually when I came off it I found a week later I felt a lot happier. No other poss reason for it, but wondered how long I had been feeling needlessly low for. Worth trying something new and perhaps the coil without hormones would work better while you detox Smile

It took me about 8 months for them to go back to normal so it might be a while yet. Keep doing the tests if it puts your mind at ease, I used to too.

milkteef · 27/08/2012 01:16

How soon can I get a coil fitted? Do I have to wait for the hormones to go?

I should imagine you could get one fitted right away, esp the non hormonal one. Worth asking yr doc for an appt.
Btw, when I stopped depo it didn't take 6 months, like they said it would, to get pg, just 3, so imagine you will be back to regular cycle (oh joy!) fairly soon. Good luck.

Krumbum · 27/08/2012 01:35

You have to have had a period to prove to them your not pregnant when they put the coil in. They got so many rules at sexual health places!

ATourchOfInsanity · 27/08/2012 01:39

I'd speak to your dr, maybe they can do a pg test and fit it same day? I would have thought they would rather protect you than leave you to the elements? I'd go and see what yr options are.

First time it took 18 months for my periods to return after coming off Depo, second time round a couple of weeks but that was because I didn't come off it as such but I changed onto the pill.

milkteef · 27/08/2012 13:57

Hopefully something more permanent can be fitted. I'm booking an appointment tomorrow with the doctor but since appointments are usually weeks in advance I might go to the sexual health walk in clinic on Wednesday too.

Krumbum, you don't need to have had a period to get a coil fitted. I had the mirena one fitted 12 weeks after DC4 was born and as she was exclusively BF I hadn't had a period since before being pregnant. They just did a pregnancy test immediately before fitting coil. Letter also said to use contraception between getting letter and date of appointment, which was 3 weeks.

Krumbum · 27/08/2012 14:14

Ah my nearest clinic told my friend to come back just after her period for this reason. Maybe they arnt all the same.

glastocat · 27/08/2012 14:15

It took me a year to get my periods back after depo. And longer to lose the three stone I put on. Angry
