Towelgate

Our towels were old and manky and all seem to have random threads pulled, strange bleach stains (I mean how?) and other stains that don't seem to come out even with treatment.

So I buy a large quantity of lovely fresh towels. We sort out stuff for charity every month but I decide the charity shop can do without stained old thready towels, save the most respectable ones just in case and throw the rest away.

DH has retrieved them out of the dustbin, painstakingly washed them all and plans to do something with them. Probably take them to the charity shop, he says. Or store them in the garage until he works out a use for them.

Would you find this irritating? If you would find it irritating, just how irritating would you find it?

See if any local animal rescue centres want them

Talyra · 26/08/2012 15:37

I cut mine up for cleaning cloths, would he go for that?

BackforGood · 26/08/2012 15:47

It is a bit strange to go and get them out the bin, but certainly not as strange as putting things in the bin in the first place, that can be used elsewhere.

If something is remotely reusable it gets recycled. But promptly! I don't want stuff cluttering up the space I have now freed up after recycling things. My garage is amost done, and when finished will have a tumble dryer (that I haven't used for two years anyway), a new tall freezer and purpose built storage for the few things we'll need to keep in there.

I would not be keen on keeping some old, albeit washed, towels that just sit there not being used.

I now have a rule that if something hasn't been used for 6 months it goes. The only exceptions are for anything specific to a season, eg a snow shovel.

picnicbasketcase · 26/08/2012 15:57

I wouldn't have binned them, but at the same time, it would majorly fuck me off if DH went back over a job I'd done and 'corrected' it. Editing my bins is not acceptable Grin

DontmindifIdo · 26/08/2012 16:02

Right, that's it, time to make a stand - you tell him you both had plans for the towels, yours was to throw them away, his was to keep them and give them to his DN, she doesnt want them so he has to come up with another plan for them as if they are still in the garage next bin night, you will put them in the bin.

I'd also say that you think he's one step away from being one of those horders on the TV, so this has been a tipping point for you, and you want the doors and window units gone too - take them to the tip tomorrow.

Honestly, I know your pain, if DH was left to his own devises, our house would be full of broken crap.

Hopefullyrecovering · 26/08/2012 17:07

I am quite liking the leave the bastard solution but I do take on board the point that there are places that would be interested in old towels and I could have tried harder with the recycling. I don't want them recycled to the garage in perpetuity though!

Give him a deadline. If the towels aren't gone by then you'll be getting rid of them yourself.

marquesas · 26/08/2012 17:17

Definitely look for local pet rescue, the one near me is always asking for old towels and blankets.

Take them there and if your DH ever notices tell him you say an advert and wanted them to be put to good use.

Oh I'm with you OP. This morning I had a cup of coffee which tasted odd, but milk was not curdled. Came back from shopping earlier, and I asked dp to check the date - 19th August! He said, well it tasted fine this morning, so no point in chucking it out. I poured it away obviously.

He's got all manner of wood in the garage, and has 're-vamped' our broken garden table out of bed slats. OMFG. That'll be going as soon as I can find a cheap replacement. The slats are too wide for it to be of any practical use, so things don't stand up right on it.
