To just do nibbles for my 40th and not full buffet?

Have hired a rugby club for my 40th and a DJ for a disco. There will be a bar. It is 7.30pm-12pm but I guess people won't start turning up until 8pm.

If you were a guest would you expect a full buffet or could I just get away with nibbles (trying to keep cost down)? The venue holds 100-150 people.

Everyone has a different interpretation of stovies but to me it's sausage, onion and mashed potato in a huge pot.

You don't get a stovie, just stovies.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/08/2012 15:22

Or you could get a few slow cookers and make stews/ curries

MrsJREwing · 26/08/2012 15:25

does stovies have gravey with the sausages and onion like cottage pie or is it dry beneath the mash?

flowery · 26/08/2012 15:26

I'd be pretty Hmm at lack of food tbh. You need to feed people. Or change the time to 8.30 and make it clear it's an after-dinner drinks-only do.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 26/08/2012 15:29

For my Dad's 60th I couldn't afford to lay on food for eveybody so we had a "bring and share" type do - but this would probably only work if you were only inviting really close friends who wouldn't mind!

Could you buy easy things like crisps, dips etc and then just get supermarket sandwich platters? Not sure how expensive they would be though.

thisthreadwilloutme · 26/08/2012 15:30

Have you ring caterers to get a price for say chill or lasagna?

I wouldn't bother with a buffet. Last few parties I have been to hardly anyone has eaten anything.

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 15:34

I would expect food and I think most people would.

NoComet · 26/08/2012 15:38

All party shalt have food.

My DDs never went to bed early enough for me to stand a chance of feeding them, getting ready, briefing the babysitter (gold dust to start with) and eat.

Adviceinscotland · 26/08/2012 15:39

I would love you forever if you brought out bacon/square sausage rolls about 11pm.

With plenty brown sauce of course.

deste · 26/08/2012 15:43

Stovies are traditionally made with the left over roast. The meat, potato, gravy and onion are totally mixed together.

GnocchiNineDoors · 26/08/2012 15:44

Big vat of curry, Big vat of rice
Pile of naans

I would be Hmm at no food.

GnocchiNineDoors · 26/08/2012 15:45

Or call your local pizza place and as if they will do a deal to drop round a stack of pizzas at a set time?

Vickles · 26/08/2012 15:45

I went to a party in a hall... The food was plastic bowls full of nuts on each table. Majorly disappointed, and everyone got completely pissed as there was so food to soak it up. We left early to go and get some food.
Rubbish party!

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 15:47

Lots of nice bread, cheese and ham, dips, olives, big bowls of salads, coleslaw. Sorted!

picnicbasketcase · 26/08/2012 15:48

I think lots of people wouldn't have dinner if they were going to a party as they'd expect to be filling up with party food tbh

JustFabulous · 26/08/2012 15:52

I think most people would expect there to be food at a party. A few bowls of nuts is not going to cut it. Less drink/people invited if you can't afford to feed them properly.

CuriousMama · 26/08/2012 15:52

You really need to tell the guests first if there's no food. I wouldn't like this as am a good eater pig and would end up nissed as a pewt.

It doesn't have to be expensive. If money's really tight then do the bring and share thing and stress no gifts.

Dp and I will be having a very low key wedding when we get round to it with a party for everyone after. I'm itching to do the food as I love to feed people as does dp, but he says we'll have enough on our plate. I catered for my own 40th but did way too much. Lots of tupperware went home with guests Grin

You have to feed people.
