to get a cleaner

2 hours a week, £16.

We're hardly flush but could manage this. I'm failing badly. I am of work just now, maternity leave. I can get straightened up fine but haven't vacuumed the stairs in weeks.

I'd like a cleaner to mop, Hoover, change beds, dust and put clothes away. And clean bathroom.

Is that what they do?

Every thing apart from the oven from top to bottom every service is done including windows ( inside only upstairs)

I hadn't had a cleaner for years (it was when I was at work but she retired). I didn't bother looking for one after that. A few months ago, a card came through the front door which I would normally throw away without looking at it advertising a local cleaner. I rang and she started a couple of months ago. She set up her own 'business' because she had been made redundant from whatever other job she had.

She's thorough and does more than I ever did (like moving the toaster to clean underneath) and comes once a month or when I can't be bothered to do housework when I have guests coming for dinner.

I did hint to her though that she ought to put a landline telephone number on her card because a mobile number would be a put off. A landline number would give an indication of where the cleaner is based and a mobile is more expensive to ring. I nearly didn't ring for this reason.

YADNBU. I love our cleaner. She does two hours once a week for £15 (oop north) and is worth her weight in gold. She dusts, hoovers, mops, cleans mirrors and generally makes the place spotless. She also irons our shirts if she has time and is much more thorough than me-she'll shine the kettle and toaster and cleans the inside of the microwave etc. I was just thinking the other day that I need to give her a nice Christmas present!

Sometimes, other times we are here and we swap floors when she is finished with upstairs.

YANBU. It's totally up to you.

Yanbu. I'm getting one when I go back to work. I'd have got one sooner had I not been on SMP.

Lonelylou · 26/08/2012 18:07

I'd like one but how do you know who you can trust? I hate the thought of anyone invading my personal space

bobbledunk · 26/08/2012 19:15

yanbu, anything that makes life more enjoyable or comfortable is a good thing, nothing to feel guilty about.

WoodlandHills · 26/08/2012 19:22

I run my own cleaning business

What you are asking is fine but in my area the hourly rate most cleaners charge tends to be slightly higher at about £9 - £16 p/h

And yanbu for wanting a cleaner (although I am slightly biased!)

MarshaBrady · 26/08/2012 19:25

Get a cleaner.

If you can afford it, it just makes life so much easier.

Walk out walk in to the reveal. Clean and so nice.

neverputasockinatoaster · 26/08/2012 19:45

I used to have a cleaner and loved how clean the house was BUT I found the tidying up before she came rendered me more stressed than cleaning. Also she was obsessed with the fact that we had toys for the children in the living room - she did NOT approve. When we went away on holiday we came back to find the toy boxes stacked up in DS's room. DS is ASD and does not do change!
However - she did make the bed for me if I stripped it and left clean sheets out.
Then DH was made redundant and our cleaner was one of the things we had to stop. DH is now working but we decided the stress to me was not worth it. Instead I work part time and thus have time to clean!

bitofcheese · 26/08/2012 20:04

best of luck, i can't really afford a cleaner but am really busy with work so as a treat have had one (once every two weeks) but have gone through three so far. i am not overly fussy but have found that apart from one cleaner who was REALLY expensive (but very thorough) the others are pretty bad and not worth the effort, better doing it myself.........

NewRowSees · 26/08/2012 20:17

Definitely get one if you can afford it. Our lady comes once a week for 3 hours and it makes a HUGE difference to my peace of mind. I work full time so it's a life saver not to have to spend weekends cleaning. She's also much quicker than I would be. Do it!

Trills · 26/08/2012 20:20

If you would rather have the cleaning done and not have the money, than YANBU to get a cleaner.

If you would rather have the money and do the cleaning yourself, than YWBU to get a cleaner.

apostropheuse · 26/08/2012 20:31

You're not being unreasonable at all! It's your money and your choice. Go for it.

OrangeLily · 26/08/2012 20:31

Get one if you can! We have a cleaner for two hours every fortnight for our (big) one bedroom flat. We're moving soon and will very much be having a cleaner there took

It means you can keep on top of the tidying because things have to be put away before the cleaner comes.

Ours will do beds if we want but we prioritise kitchen and bathroom.

We had a different cleaner whilst ours was in hols recently and she turned down our bed too. DH was away so I pretended I was on holidays Grin
