WIBU to buy a new mattress?

I have arthritis and struggle to sleep. My other half also has a bit of a dodgy back. Our current mattress is approx 8 years old and we had a mattress topper on it about 3 years ago, which is OK but not as comfortable as it used to be.

While we were on holiday we had a mattress that was fantastic, and we both slept well on it. We made a note of the details of it and have since found one on the internet for just over £200.

We may have to pay out £2,000 in the near future (we?re not 100% sure if we are going to have this bill, which is property related), which would leave us at rock bottom, and reliant on our credit card so would it be unreasonable to spend this money out?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Are you sure it was the mattress that meant you slept well on holiday? I often feel I sleep better on holiday not because the mattress is better, but because I'm on holiday and feeling more relaxed than at home.

Yes Halcyondays - usually I wake through my back, leg, hip or arm pain. I didn't do this on holiday at all.

Personally I think sleep is such an essential that I would do it. You spend a huge amount of you life asleep and bad sleep impacts on your health and life in so many ways.

So I would, but I don't worry that much about debt, only you know your own finances and where it will leave you.

inkyfingers · 25/08/2012 15:54

i would def buy it. Great for both your long-term healths. Just do it.

You'd avoid days off work with back pain, better mood from more sleep. If cost is an issue, can you get a loan/instalments.

halcyondays · 25/08/2012 15:54

Then itwould be worth spending the money on a new mattress.

Yes get it. £200 is not a lot for a mattress they can cost much much more than that. Sleep is essential to your health and you can't put a price on that. Maybe you could ebay some stuff to help pay for it?

Thank you all for your comments, all good points that I have noted.

I never sleep on holiday at all, regardless of the mattress! Grin
I hate teh idea of being in debt for myself, but as long as you are realistically sure that you can make ends meet, even paying monthly or whatever I would say go for it. I've had enough bad nights sleep to not value it and if you can guarantee that this mattress will address the problems you have then a reasounding "Go For It" from me.
