I?ve been temping in a company and helping open/sort out applications for a full-time administrative post for someone with at least 2 years experience.

I?m job hunting myself at the moment and so I know how hard and totally soul destroying it is, but AIBU to be totally Shock at the following:

Today I opened about 120 applications, of which

  • 23 spelt the name of the company incorrectly (OK it?s a bit of an unusual name but still)
  • 8 spelt the name of the person they were writing to incorrectly
  • 4 spelt both wrong!

They had been asked to enclose handwritten covering letters

  • at least 20 were totally illegible (in fact I?m convinced one wasn?t written in English)
  • 5 were written in green pen and 2 in red
  • and one was written on a scrappy price of paper with a shopping list on the back

15 had forgotten to enclose a CV or application form (one of which had an excellent covering letter)

5 came with no stamps on the envelope

and my personal favourite was the envelope that had a heart and SWALK written over the seal at the back!

YANBU

That's annoying & shocking all at once OP, but it's kind of reassuring for those of us who do know how to apply properly, that we have at least some chance of getting accepted if lots of other applications are so basically incorrect

A friend (who can't spell the basics) has just been accepted on a one year Postgrad teaching course at a major university.

Giving a little bit benefit of the doubt I have to ask were the company name and the contact name spelt correctly on the advert? I have seen it happen before.

All the rest YANBU.

Oh, I hope when it comes to me applying for a job that the level of competition is similar.

People can't seem to spell these days without the aid of spellcheck- pure laziness!

On the shopping list I PMSL'd the other day, went to Tesco and someone had left their shopping list in the trolley
It listed
Chicken breasts
Nice ham
Nice cheese

My 10yo was looking at me as though I had a screw loose I was sniggering so much!!

I can well believe it. I had a call today enquiring as to what sort of accommodation would be provided with the post. A post that's even more part time than my 3 days a week Hmm

I was helping someone with a job application to be sent by email. I said "ok you need to read it over, put in punctuation and sign your name". Next thing he had sent it I said wait you don't have a full stop or even signed your name. His reply " I didn't want the job anyway".

It is certainly a good way of helping narrow down the shortlist but the 120 were just this week's applications, the closing date isnt till the middle of next week!
