The Beeb and wikipedia think they started in 88.

I've clearly been going round with the misapprehension that 82 was the last full year to do O-levels.

I did my GCSE's in 89 and was the 2nd year to do do them - so yabu

Another one to agree - I sat them in '89 and we were the second year to do them. My husband sat O levels in '86.

They definitely started in 1988. I took mine in '89 and we were the second year to do them.

nope . I did me O levels here in1986

I did one 'O' Level in around 1987 and then GCSEs in 1988 so I think the Beeb are right. I did one early because I was awesome.

I did my maths GCSE in 88. We were the first year to do them and even then the media were being nasty about it. I was only in 4th year (did the rest of my GCSEs in 89), but remember my family going on about how easy the exam was, quoting tabloid nonsense (none of the questions in newspapers were on my test paper).

I was quite upset at how much I worked and how most adults I knew were so willing to de-value my efforts.
