Your iTunes is maybe set to manually sync rather than automatic. But you can still update it.
In iTunes can you see your iPod listed under devices on the left hand side?

If so, just click on the music you want on the right hand side of itunes, and drag it over to the iPod icon in the devices list.

Maybe there is some cunning profit-related reason

YES. Its a sneaky little bastard.

My sister and BIL are very clever with these sorts of things. They did a lot of research and have now completely rethought their music purchase & storage methods. They now buy all their music on CD (yes CD) and burn them in highest quality to a back-up drive, then store the original CD in some fancy-pants storage facility in the attic. They then download the MP3s from the back-up drive into itunes, and onto all of their devices.

Binkyridesagain · 23/08/2012 10:52

Yeah!
they,ll be no stopping you now, next you'll be putting your cd collection on there

eurochick · 23/08/2012 10:53

I also still buy almost everything on CD. That way I can play it on my stereo indoors, in the car or on the pod.

caramelwaffle · 23/08/2012 10:54

This is so funny Grin

Having a macbook/ipad/ipod combo makes it so much easier.

'puter: do you want me to sync this blah blah blah?

me: who said that? Sync? Wah...who. What? Eh?

me: Oooooo. Ok...

Binkyridesagain · 23/08/2012 10:55

Thats what i do Vivi, knowing that apple software upgrades can kill iphones, I'm not prepared to lose any of my music from my ipod, so I buy cds, copy them on to the computer and then download to the ipod.

caramelwaffle · 23/08/2012 10:56

I now still buy everything on CD and upload it to the macbook. Plug in the ipod and by Merlins magic it goes>>> over there

advisemewisely · 23/08/2012 10:57

we have loads of cds still, all in big ones of these
www.amazon.co.uk/Caselogic-Nylon-Wallet-280-capacity/dp/B00005ATMG

take up far less space, and also have done it with dvds, so if we go away we just take a load.

This is where being a teacher comes in handy:

Pass said piece of electronic quackery to a trusted pupil.
Simper with ignorance.
Watch pupil make everything alright.
Praise student for being so helpful and bright. (There have been times when a quick e-mail home to M&D seems appropriate)
Part company with everyone feeling happy.

For years I never knew how to top up my PAYG phone as i always used to give a pupil of mine everything and ask her 'Do it for me please!'

advisemewisely · 23/08/2012 11:01

complex i was about to steal a neighbours son for a lesson!

Just buy an MP3

MadBusLady · 23/08/2012 11:22

Vivipru, that is interestingly exactly what my instinct is to do, though I haven't researched it at all. I have really been without a single, consistent source of music for years because I've been waiting for things to "settle down" in some ill-defined way. Enough!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/08/2012 11:57

Can I put my CDs onto my computer, without having an iAnything. I don't want one, but I have hundreds of CDs and never listen to them. I lost everything when we got the new pc, all my mp3s - can I make new ones from the CDs? Does it need anything in particular software wise? and if so, is it likely to be on here already? How do I do it? allows a glimmer of hope to seep in

perfumedlife · 23/08/2012 12:00

Oh christ, what's an MP3? I've heard of it obv but what's different from an ipod? And how does one back up to a hard drive? Is that the big box that sits next to home computers? I don't have one. Blush

Binkyridesagain · 23/08/2012 12:00

Have you got windows media player and a disc drive? If so then you can put your CDs on

perfumedlife · 23/08/2012 12:02

I have windows media player but unsure what a disc drive looks like. Is it the little cup holder-like tray that pops out?

Binkyridesagain · 23/08/2012 12:03

perfumed an iPod Is a specific brand of mp3 player

perfumedlife · 23/08/2012 12:05

Well that's what I thought Binky but when ssssh said 'just buy an MP3' it sounded like that would make things easier but it's just more of the same really isn't it? Am off to have a go x

ViviPru · 23/08/2012 12:06

MadBusLady

That's precisely what my sister was waiting for, then she decided it's best just to own an original mastered hardcopy with artwork etc for as long as they make them, and create her own MP3s to play on however many devices she chooses.

I keep meaning to get around to something so organised, I've got as far as converting back to buying actual CDs, and importing them to my iTunes library...

Binkyridesagain · 23/08/2012 12:06

Yep it's the cup holder.
Open windows media, pop cd into cup holder and push cuphOlder gently into computer, hopefully something will pop up on the screen. Asking you what you want to do.
