sorry but what do they expect???

recent example being Carol Vorderman who was slightly caned on twitter

do they think they should only receive 100% positive posts? from adoring fans?

Obviously some cases are beyond the pale (Louise Mensch and threats towards her kids)- but if people decide to post unkind comments, well is this not the flipside of being a celeb? you are just reading what people have thought for years anyway

I dont condone nasty comments, but I think people are fucking stupid if they dont expect that some people have a low opinion of them

and to then try and get them prosecuted....in some cases

aibu????

Yes. Yabu. There must be some policing regarding the free reign which the internet has given to the public.

All kinds of cranks can publish all kinds of shit and if they're saying disgusting things about people who have just lost a baby, then they need taking to court.

In the case of general bitching, well fair enough...to an extent...

Krumbum · 23/08/2012 12:27

Yanbu. If you choose to be Celebrity and then choose to have a twitter account you can't just expect nicey nicey arse kissing. Obviously out and out nastiness and bullying should be removed but often people are called trolls simply for saying something honest.

porcamiseria · 23/08/2012 12:51

exactly, bullying is bullying. to call insults on twitter bullying undermines it

someone calling Carol Virderman is old slapper is the truth not bullying

YABU

There's a difference between having a low opinion of someone and verbally (or whatever the text version is) attacking them.

There may be a woman in accounts who you think is a miserable trout-faced bitch, but you don't go and shout at her in public, do you?

ThisIsNotHoneyDragon · 23/08/2012 12:57

YABU. No one should be expected to be trolled on the internet.

FalseStartered · 23/08/2012 13:00

if i were to come on thread and call you a mealy mouthed whinging twat, porca you would have every right to report me to MNHQ and have my post removed for many reasons, only one of those being in breach of the site guidelines

if many other posters (who only know you as a poster on MN) came on and agreed with me, what would you want to do?

let them all stand, because being in a the public domain you've courted that attention or have it stopped because it's hurtful and untrue?

MamaBear17 · 23/08/2012 13:14

I don't agree with any nastiness being directed at anyone on social networking sites. I am a teacher and spend a lot of time sorting out distraught kids who have been targeted on facebook etc. I use social networking, but tend to ignore celebrities, especially ones that I do not like (Frankie Boyle would be an example for me here - not a fan of his particular style). I would not dream of following him just so that I could say something mean, I just ignore him because he doesnt interest me. I did find the recent treatment of Gary Barlow repulsive after some moron bombarded his twitter feed with 'jokes' about his stillborn child. No one in the world deserves to be treated like that. I agree that celebrities put themselves out there and can not expect that everyone will like them, BUT, unless you are involved in spirited debate in which your opinion is backed up with reasoning and fact, I think the old rule applies: if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all!

porcamiseria · 23/08/2012 13:18

as always through provoking answers

I dont know, I think celebrities are naive to not expect some level of pasting if they open a twitter account

but true, saying nasty shit to a stranger is never on
