to think British Gas are utter rubbish as they broke my in laws boiler

my inlaws had an annual service as part of their British Gas service contract.

There was nothing wrong, all working ok. Nothing wrong at all.

The lad who did the service removed a part then said 'it will not go back in' and left saying they would be back tomorrow. My in laws had no hot water but were happy to wait till tomorrow.

They were told they had to remove a portion of worktop to get tp the boiler the next day (this would involve sawing it in half etc etc) and they wern't best pleased.

They were then told they dont need to saw their worktop but it would be fixed asap.

11 Days later they have been told the boiler is obsolete and they need to buy a whole new one.

So their boiler was broken by a British Gas contractor during a routine service and they have been without hot water for 11 days (and counting) now need to shell out for a whole new boiler.

My inlaws are almost 80 and very mild mannered (and actually very nice indeed ! ) and have rang to complain but 'do not want to make a fuss'.

If it were me I would be complaining a lot.

AIBU to think British Gas are being complete rubbish breaking a working boiler and not fixing it then not paying for a replacement ??

Should I complain on their behalf and how ? Would they speak to me or just quote data protection shit ?

My boiler was fine. BG came to do an annual service next thing the boiler is hanging off the wall and he says he has to cut off the whole gas supply. They left us for 10 days with no hot water/ heating just after DS (6 weeks old) was brought home from hospital being diagnosed with a heart condition, they had no care! They would tell me someone would come, I would wait all day and no one would turn up. They tried to get us to buy a new boiler, but we went for the local independent company. Worst company I have ever dealt with.

Jamrolly that is absolutely disgusting.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/01/2015 02:49

This has been going on for decades. I remember a consumer programme from the 90s where a BG subcontractor gave their fitters lessons in how to break working systems to get work. They filmed them faking tank leaks, reinstalling used parts and on one occasion sexually assaulting a customer.
Find an independent and hang on to him. Our plumber has been with us 22 years, over which we've spent maybe 2000 quid, most of it servicing costs.

HelenaDove · 18/01/2015 02:59

Unfortunately ppl who live in HA properties have to put up with whatever company the HA chooses to foist on them.

Disgrace another tv programme about this subject needs to be made. Its long overdue.

We have the Corgi plan after cancelling BG. I still stand in the kitchen and watch like a hawk as to what the guy is doing. So far so good. Last visit he told me he also is contracted to do BG services, but prefers the Corgi plan and recommends it to other people.

We has a similar problem with British Gas. The boiler magically broke when it was being serviced. We were told that it needed a power flush and that because the cost of this was so high we might want to consider getting a new boiler. We got someone else in to fix it for £45! The service engineer had left a valve open! I'm not sure if it was due to incompetence or whether it was deliberate to get us to pay for a power flush/buy a new boiler.
I think you need to get somebody independently to look at it to find out what has happened.

If bg engineers have been caught out (tip of huge iceberg if so many mntters) damaging boilers and potentially putting lifes at risk why aren't they been reported to the police re the damage and to the company and ofcom. Shocked this is going on. Watch dog, facebook and twitter....

The company who currently have the contract for the HA im with is Liberty Gas. They left a tenant without heating and hot water for six and a half weeks. There have been several no shows from them for gas safety checks yet there is a Gas Access Campaign running at the moment where HAs want to gain more powers to get access to properties The problem is NOT the tenants Its the no shows from the engineers.

And if you live in an HA property you cant just call in someone else Their attitude is you have to suck it up.

HelenaDove · 19/01/2015 16:14

After leaving a tenant with no heating and hot water for six weeks their work has now flooded one of the rooms in her home and the carpet is sodden.

3littlefrogs · 19/01/2015 16:21

I too have had dreadful experiences with British Gas.
I don't think their so-called engineers are qualified.

Their engineer recently told me my boiler couldn't be fixed and I would need a new one - all it needed was a fuse replaced and it works perfectly.

A few years ago there was a problem with a tiny part in the heating system. I had the BG person back 4 times, then eventually my BIL looked at it and realised they had fitted the wrong part. He nipped out and got the right one, fitted it, no further problems.

MagnetsOnItsTail · 19/01/2015 16:22

We had a boiler that broke after servicing as well. The engineer had left the ignition part disconnected with gas leaking everywhere (the boiler is in the garage). I had to get a Transco engineer out a few hours later to shut off our gas.

We were also told the part needed was obsolete, however British Gas somehow Hmm managed to find it after we refused their kind offer of an expensive new boiler.

HelenaDove · 19/01/2015 16:53

As our HA uses Liberty Gas we just have to suck it up. These twonks who just flooded the tenants flat i mentioned above do our gas safety checks. And quite often dont turn up and you can never get hold of them on the phone. Its not mentioned in the gas access campaign though. No its conveniently blamed on the tenants.
