I think AIBU and DP thinks I am being PFB

We discussed this this morning and his answer was "Well, if we're not sure throw it out to MN!" Grin

PFB who is 8 started a new school. Old school had very strict rules on snacks and the like. Fruit or veg was offered to the lower school and upper school just had a no snacks policy. he was never hungry at school so there was no issue.

Passed the little shop on the way to new school this morning, queue of kids buying crisps for their break. Cue "Can I have some crisps for break please? They're allowed in this school."

I had no money and said I would sort something out for him to take to school tomorrow. Didn't commit to what that would be.

I know a packet of crisps a day isn't going to kill him, but I think that's a lot of crisps in a week. I don't want him to stand out or feel left out though.

Do I
a) Send him in with fruit. I'm his parent after all and his diet is my responsibility and I don't want him eating junk in the middle of lessons.

b) Send him in with crisps, appreciate it won't kill him, he eats so much fruit anyway and is very active and realise it may be time to stop being all PFB.

Ok yes you are being a tad PFBish, but solution 3) is to give him crisps once or twice a week as a treat.

scurryfunge · 22/08/2012 13:39

Why not make it a once a week thing?

theredhen · 22/08/2012 13:39

yanbu - if you don't want him to have crisps everyday.

Perhaps a compromise, crisps twice a week? Fruit 3 times a week?

Or a crisp like substitute? Crackers or something?

caramelwaffle · 22/08/2012 13:40

Send him with fruit.

It'll probably be swopped anyway.

Flisspaps · 22/08/2012 13:40

Alternate crisps with the fruit, or let him take them once a week.

nightowlmostly · 22/08/2012 13:40

We always had crisps for our snack when I was wee, they never did me any harm! I think as long as he has a healthy diet most of the time and is active, a packet of crisps won't hurt. If you buy the multipacks, the bags you get are smaller, which will help as well.

redexpat · 22/08/2012 13:40

How about fruit monday-thursday and crisps on friday? Would that comprimise work?

chickenwingsmmmm · 22/08/2012 13:40

I wouldn't let my 8 year old have crisps everyday. Maybe once or twice a week, at the very most.

hillyhilly · 22/08/2012 13:41

I try to keep treats for a Friday. Would that work as a compromise? I do think that a pack a day is too much, and a bad snack habit to form

cansu · 22/08/2012 13:41

Why not just say he can have crisps onc work twice a week? Depends how you feel about it? It is down to you to decide.

nightowlmostly · 22/08/2012 13:41

Also, maybe get the baked crisps you can get, tesco do them in a few flavours. Just as nice, but a little healthier.

marquesas · 22/08/2012 13:42

I wouldn't give my child crisps every day just because everyone else is.

The next shop you pass might be full of pupils buying a Mars bar and a Red Bull for breakfast (I used to go past such a shop on the way to a previous job). Stick to food choices that you feel comfortable with.

TallDwarf · 22/08/2012 13:43

A touch pfb but there's nothing wrong with that. I'd go with crisps once or twice a week and fruit/veg for the rest.

ekupeg · 22/08/2012 13:44

I was allowed crisps or chocolate on a friday if I had been good all week

MrsKeithRichards · 22/08/2012 13:46

We do crisps Monday and Friday, fruit in between! This has happened naturally for us because in infants he'd get fruit three days from school.

eurochick · 22/08/2012 13:51

Have something "crisp like" (i.e. chedders, rice cakes, ritz crackers) most days and crisps occasionally.

thisisyesterday · 22/08/2012 13:54

i wouldn't send him with crisps every single day, no.
maybe once or twice a week.

confusedpixie · 22/08/2012 13:58

You can buy fruit crisps? Yanbu imo though, crisps every day is a tad much (but I had at least one pack a day growing up and I'm fine!) If anything it's not goodfor the teeth iirc. He'll be fine with fruit our crackers and things like that, just vary it a bit.

Journey · 22/08/2012 14:05

I think it is rather pathetic as opposed to being PFB. If you can't make a decision on whether to give your ds crisps or not then I question how you're going to make any decisions about his education!

mummyonvalium · 22/08/2012 14:11

Nothing wrong with crisps occasionally. I would not put them in everyday but maybe a couple of days a week.

Debeez · 22/08/2012 14:12

I recently made a rather big decision about his education Journey so I'm not overly worried about my parenting skills. However when you make a choice you think is best for your child and everyone else seems to think the other way it's normal and healthy to question the decisions you have made and look again to see if they are really in the best interests of you and your child.

It's seems fruit and vegetable crisps exist. Come in handle snack size packets and give us the best of both worlds. Thank you to everyone who helped. I suspected I was BU but at least I know I was BU within the normal realms of parental worry. Grin

Debeez: I will recommend pear crisps as a start on those. Nice and chewy and sweet ish, whereas apple ones seem drier. I love pear crisps :)
