If your child doesn't reliably flush the toilet...

...then they are too young to go the loo by themselves in public.

Ate out this lunchtime, and went to the toilet. Cubical (there was only one) was busy. Young girl (7 ish) exits and the toilet wasn't flushed. On the basis that I would have heard if she had been trying and failed because it was broken or something, AIBU to think that if a child isn't yet aware that they need to flush they shouldn't be going to the loo alone. I mean, worse things happen at sea obviously, but really - I don't want to be faced with a dirty toilet.

damn it!
Biscuit

I don't mind an unflushed toilet, after all I do know how to flush but I can't stand people leaving wee drops on the toilet seat. I don't like having to wipe other peoples wee off the seat

civilfawlty · 21/08/2012 17:01

Why do I get a biscuit. My first incidentally. Why doesn't the parent have a responsibility to make sure the loo is flushed?

You should've grabbed her by the hair and rubbed her face in it.

Or, y'know, got over it.

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 21/08/2012 17:04

I make mine flush the toilet and clean up any doplets they've left! It's basic cleanliness and not exactly difficult to teach, though many parents don't seem to bother!

Yanbu.

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 21/08/2012 17:05

Flush it yourself? What's up with that?

HeadfirstOverTheHighJump · 21/08/2012 17:06

I do flush it if it's been left unflushed, but a 7 year old should be able to flush a toilet. My 4 year old remembers to.

puds11 · 21/08/2012 17:07

Because you have no idea why she didnt flush it, and it really isn't a big deal. Its a bit pathetic in my humble opinion.

LingDiLong · 21/08/2012 17:08

Kids forget sometimes. It's not a case of them either always flushing or not ever flushing. And christ, plenty of adults forget, should someone be supervising them too??? Quite frankly, if I were to follow my 7 year old into the public toilets with her siblings and other assorted kids I look after it would be far more hassle than an unflushed chain.

civilfawlty · 21/08/2012 17:10

A) not so humble Hmm
B) why is a basic skill like flushing the loo suddenly not a responsibility of a parent? I don't want to be faced with someone else's shit. I don't expect anyone else to clean up
MY dc's shit. And it wasn't the child's fault, it was the parents'.

"You should've grabbed her by the hair and rubbed her face in it."

Sorry but that made me ROFL Grin

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 21/08/2012 17:11

Kids are forgetful sometimes. I remind them when I can, like at home, but I don't follow my DS into toilets any more so can't check, and I guess I don't see it as that big a deal if they do occasionally forget, so long as it's only sometimes.

LingDiLong · 21/08/2012 17:12

That should read, 'far more hassle to other people using the toilet' by the way. I end up blocking up the entrance or the sinks and causing a kerfuffle when we all go in. Far easier to just send her in alone with a reminder to flush. Which she will inevitably forget sometimes, especially on a day out in the summer holidays when she's excited to get back to what she's doing.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/08/2012 17:35

If I was faced with an unflushed loo, I'd simply think "kids!" I would flush for them and get on with it. Would assume they still have their L plates for using loos/had forgotten and not think any less of the parent as they were probably working on it at home.

I think YABU

MammaTJisanOlympicSumoWrestler · 21/08/2012 17:41

I have a DD who will be seven tomorrow. Sometimes she remembers to flush, sometimes she doesn't. Is it really that big a deal? Flushing the toilet is hardly having to don rubber gloves and put your hand down it, so doesn't really equate with cleaning up her shit.

thekidsrule · 21/08/2012 18:10

god i cant wait till we get some decent aibu posted

standards have been slipping of late Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 21/08/2012 18:14

It's not just children who can't flush, in my experience. I get more annoyed by the ladies of a certain age who can't bear their arse to touch toilet seat, hover, and spray drops everywhere.

Or those who can't operate the sanitary bin adequately.

Also - if an unflushed toilet bothers you, never stop at French motorway services.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 21/08/2012 18:38

YANBU.

Can you convince my 9yo that it is essential that he flushes every single time he goes for me please, because I am clearly failing miserably.

slowestwildebeast · 21/08/2012 19:56

Yabu. Maybe they were put off by the sound of you hopping about outside and thought a game of hopscotch was happening so forgot to flush!

Lara2 · 21/08/2012 20:06

YABU - my ds's, 19 & 15 still forget sometimes. Drives me bats!!! And as for leaving the seat up.....
