About the word 'bitch'?

I was watching Come Dine With Me whilst eating my lunch at about 12.30 and one of the contestants made a nasty comment, to which another replied jokily 'Ooh, you bitch'. I am not a prude and swear myself all the time, but AIBU to think that during the daytime this word should be bleeped out? It is swearing, to me, and not suitable for pre-watershed. Do you agree or am I being too prim?

I dont like the word but dont think of it as swearing.

Im still shocked whenever i hear someone use the word fanny, worst of the worst sweary words where i grew up.

Ambrosius · 21/08/2012 16:34

I think its swearing. It's not something I'd be happy hearing a child repeat, same with bugger, bloody and bastard. (ooh all the B's)

Ephiny · 21/08/2012 16:35

It's not a pleasant way to speak to someone, but it's not actually swearing, surely? Presumably it's OK if someone's talking about a female canine?

valiumredhead · 21/08/2012 16:36

I consider it swearing and hate the word - definitely shouldn't be on CDWM.

lalaloopylou · 21/08/2012 16:37

I think it's swearing
Im pretty sure the b word was said during the opening credits of xfactor or Saturday (when the judges were Being introduced) I was a little shocked as even though it was in the evening it is still a family show

toboldlygo · 21/08/2012 16:39

A bit prim - how would you react if I referred to a female dog as a bitch (as I must do several times a week for dog-related activities)?

DozyDuck · 21/08/2012 16:40

I don't like the word. But I'm a bit meh about them now since we seem to hear worse walking down the street Sad

SchmancyPants · 21/08/2012 16:41

Lala, I think you're right about X factor as well. I think it can be classified as swearing. I'm s teacher and I'm pretty sure my students would expect to be punished more severely for using the word 'bitch' than the word 'cow' for example.

It's camp. (S)Come Dine With Me is offensive. You shouldnt be watching it at all!

SchmancyPants · 21/08/2012 16:44

Toboldlygo, of course a female dog is a bitch and I wouldn't expect you to refer to one as anything else- but that is the correct term in context. Surely you can see that as an epithet for a woman, the term is offensive? How would you feel if one of your DC used it?

Nagoo · 21/08/2012 16:46

It's a low-level swear in my book, along with bloody bugger and bastard.

Wouldn't expect to hear any of them on daytime telly either.

valiumredhead · 21/08/2012 16:48

Bitch when referred to as a female dog is fine - its correct meaning.

Bugger and bastard are not low level at ALL!

Kaluki · 21/08/2012 16:52

Does the watershed still exist?
With cable and satellite tv I thought all rules had flown out the window!
I don't let my dc watch certain things regardless of the time and CDWM is one of them!

LittleMoo6 · 21/08/2012 16:59

I wouldn't have been happy if it had been on in my house and my 3 yr old heard it. I do consider it swearing tbh, albeit a mild form. I think it should've been cut from a daytime programme.

On the same theme I was really cross with DH's Nan as we went to visit her with my daughter and she kept using the same word. She's not a nice person and loves to boast about how she's insulted people down the bingo Angry.

toboldlygo · 21/08/2012 17:02

I don't have DC.

I only mentioned it because I find that some people do still flinch at the word used in context - even other dog owners, which I find very prim indeed. Sort of "Is it a dog or a bitch?" -flustered- "She's a girl." Hmm

SchmancyPants · 21/08/2012 17:10

That made me laugh Toboldlygo! I really don't like the word at all in reference to a woman but in reference to a female dog, it is fine, of course!
