To those who work in a school: Easier to diet in the hols or while at work?

I'm finding it pretty easy to stay on track - started the hols with the usual dream of going back after the hols a dress size smaller. Did it 2 years ago and went on to get to goal with ww, but put it all back on again!

I'm completely out of routine, having lazy mornings and then going out with my DDs. Finding it easy to stick to my cals (using mfp as is very flexible, free and easy to do) and am losing weight. Part of the reason I'm finding it easy to stick to my cals is that I don't eat breakfast unless it is a work day. Also, it is easy to go out for a walk or hop on my exercise bike to earn a few more cals on a hungry day.

When I go back, I'll be in routine and will usually eat breakfast and a low cal lunch. And I will be on my feet and up and down stairs more every day so generally more active. And on my days off (I work pt) I will be doing the school run.

Unfortunately, there will also be lots more temptation (in the way of cakes and biscuits in the staff room for everytime someone has a birthday) and more stress along with less time to shop, plan and cook.

How does everyone else get on in hols/term time?

Strangely I find it so much easier at work. I'm a teacher in a nursery and there is all sorts to eat but I'm so busy i rarely get the chance.

During the holidays I am busy but always picnicking, meeting friends, having people round and find it so much harder to be careful.

I did ww from Christmas to June and lost 21lb but have gained 7lb during the holidays so am trying really hard now.

orangeandlemons · 21/08/2012 14:28

I find it easier in the holidays when I'm a work, and easier at work when I'm on holiday IYSWIM Sad, ie both impossible.

AcyuallyI find it easier in hols. School is so knackering and I am always starving when I get in

squoosh · 21/08/2012 14:34

I don't work in a school but do work in an environment where people are always bringing in cakes and biscuits. But I do find it easier to stick to a healthy eating regime when I'm at work as I'm busy and just ignore all the sweet things.

Weekends and evenings at home are my downfall.

EverythingsNotRosie · 21/08/2012 14:53

I have lost 10lb this holiday, having gained a stone in the last 18 months. It is much easier to fit exercise in in the holidays. But also easier to snack- too busy to notice hunger at school!

FourArms · 22/08/2012 11:02

I've lost 9.5lb in the last 3 weeks (SW), but think it will be easier once I'm back at school as I've struggled when we've been away on holiday & eaten out. Fine at home in holidays though.

I'm an evening snacker too. In fact, I'm usually a snacker full-stop. One of the reasons to start my diet during the hols was to not only lose weight, but to avoid putting on weight with snacking through the day. And eating out with the kids or putting unhealthy things in lunch boxes.

I have cut out snacks completely, except for a little something after the kids are in bed, which I need as I am usually starving by 9pm due to eating at 5-6pm. And that little snack stops me from feeling that I am depriving myself. It is either a cup of dry cereal which I enjoy eating in place of crisps, or a multipack size bag of white choc buttons, which take ages to eat compared to the cals they actually contain.

I have found that I am a lot less hungry after dieting for 4 weeks and can't eat as much as I used to when I do sit down to eat.

Last year I failed miserably, but this year I'm doing ok. I'd have liked to lose another 2.5lb by the time school starts back, but am unlikely to achieve that. It hasn't deterred me fromm trying though. Grin Fingers crossed and a final push for the last week and a half of the hols.

I eat at work through repetitive boredom.

I rarely have more than a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich a day when Im working from home/on hols

IAmRubyLennox · 22/08/2012 18:00

I definitely eat less when I'm not in school because I'm doing so much less. Sadly, this is off-set by the fact that I drink more wine because I don't have to go to work in the morning. Swings, roundabouts, etc.

OP i could have written your post!

i've been using MFP for the summer break and finding it ok, but I know once I go back to my rediculously long days of commuting i'll break! I find I end up grabbing sugar or sugary stuff to give me energy to go to the gym after work (i do love the gym as the name suggests) but thats not great really. Also my team tend to get out the snacks after the pupils have gone which doesn't help!

we'll see how it goes!

Hairtodayandgonetomorrow · 22/08/2012 18:07

I've put on weight over the summer from sitting more and eating more often. I'm starting in a new school this year where my department take turns bringing yummy homemade cakes every thursday so we'll see what happens!

I find it much easier in term time

I eat through boredom not hunger. So, when I'm busy, I can easily go for weeks on almost nothing. But once I've nothing to do I start picking.

2kidsintow · 23/08/2012 11:17

I usually have problems stopping eating once I've started. Eating something for lunch usually then finds me thinking "Mmmm, what can I have for pudding?" a little later. Partly due to boredom. Partly due to habit. Partly due to just loving food - especially things that satisfy my sweet tooth.

At work I haven't the time to snack in the morning and I take in certain things for packed lunch, so only eat that. Then it limits my potential for snacking to just the evenings.

I've managed to cut snacks completely this hol through willpower and also through taking the kids out and about with packed lunches too. We've also managed to miss the ice cream van at the parks most of the time too. Grin
