To not want to be lectured by security guard in Tesco

MardyFish · 20/08/2012 23:06

So I went into Tesco yesterday having driven three hours in horrible traffic to get there (at seaside). Starving and had only got some plantain chips I'd brought with me in the car, so I ate those as I walked in.

Went to the fish counter and asked for some fish kebabs, while still eating these banana chips, finished them, did some shopping bought wine etc., paid, whole trip took about 20 minutes or so.

When I was walking out the exit and the security guard said 'Can I have a word', I said 'Yes what is it', and stopped with my trolley, he said 'Let's walk and do this?', but I stopped there.

He said 'I heard from one of the members of staff you were eating and I don't know if you brought it with you or it was from here.'

I said 'I brought it with me I walked right past you eating it when I came in'

He said 'In future could you please let me know when you come in that you are eating.'

I said 'I'm sorry but I'm not going to notify you, if you see me eating and you want to ask me that's fine, but there's no point asking me now is there, and I'm certainly not going to ask your permission to walk in eating something I bought elsewhere.'

May I politely suggest you pull the stick from your terribly busy and important arse.

This has to be a piss-take though, no one actually says "It wouldn't happen in Waitrose" without having their tongue placed firmly in their cheek.

It was the M&S sandwich reference OP, a step too far. Better luck next time.

bogeyface · 21/08/2012 02:15

Actually I can see the point (wind up or not) that stopping someone AFTER they have eaten what they have eaten and then presumably thrown away the packaging is a stupid waste of time. Either he would have to let her go, or accuse her of theft, go through CCTV etc and see that she brought them in with her and then let her go.

Either way, a waste of everyones time.

I still wouldnt walk into a shop eating something I bought elsewhere though. I get the horrible fear of being accused of theft that only innocent people seem to suffer from :o

recall · 21/08/2012 02:17

why can't you eat in Tesco ????

aurynne · 21/08/2012 02:36

I don't get people who can't stop eating crap for 10 minutes while they are in the supermarket or the shops. Apart from being rude and impolite to other customers (especially the ones who delight in talking with a full mouth and spit food around), these people are usually eating chips, crisps and greasy stuff that ends up all over the trolley handle, for the next customer to touch (boak!). They are usually also the ones who drop the crisp bag on the floor or leave it in their trolley.

recall · 21/08/2012 03:20

but OP said she was starving after a long journey...what harm does it do ? Some people don't have time to eat leisurely and have to eat and drink on the go. I have eaten whilst shopping, I managed not to smear it about the place or spit it onto fellow shoppers, I even managed to get the packaging into a bin.

aurynne · 21/08/2012 04:25

Well, in that case my post was obviously not directed at you, recall.

postolympicblues · 21/08/2012 04:40

what was the point of him stopping you? If you had stolen them he told you he hadn't seen you do it so you would hardlyhave admitted it would you? I would not have engagwd with him.i'd have said are you making a citizems arrest yes or no? If he'd said no walked off and if yes sued him for wromgful arrest

Dawndonna · 21/08/2012 07:45

Are you diabetic? If not, stop eating in shops. It's terribly common to eat in public and all those people that wouldn't question you in Waitrose, are actually judging you.

limitedperiodonly · 21/08/2012 07:48

Plaintain crisps are upmarket, surely?

Monster Munch are common.

limitedperiodonly · 21/08/2012 07:50

And Skips.

I saw Jordan eating Skips once.

Prawny breath.

JeezyPeeps · 21/08/2012 07:52

Monster munch are wonderful!

Personally, I only judge people eating crisps in a supermarket if they are eating skips. That's totally unacceptable behaviour.

HecateHarshPants · 21/08/2012 07:53

erm. Confused why not just eat in the car before going in. It takes a few minutes to shove them in. Why would someone get out of their car, with the snack and take it into the shop to munch on, rather than doing that.

Or am I missing something here?

JeezyPeeps · 21/08/2012 07:53

Haha limited, cross post!

QuickLookUsainBolt · 21/08/2012 08:00

Of course you can eat whatever you like in a supermarket.

Though you then have to be prepared to be bothered by a security person doing their job.

Would you expect to be left in peace if you went into a cafe and took out a packed lunch for yourself? Or went into a pub with a bottle of wine?

RightBuggerforit · 21/08/2012 08:03

YABU and rude. He sounded very polite and fair. How about eating whatever in the carpark, then going shopping, so you're not eating walking around it? Or just saying 'ok sorry about that' instead of being a bit of an arse to the nice security guard who was only doing his job?

WigGold · 21/08/2012 08:09

I want to know how nice those fish kebabs were after their journey back in a hot car in seaside traffic.

squeakytoy · 21/08/2012 08:13

I suspect this is all bullshit.

Why not just eat the crisps while you were in the car?

I also cant understand people who have to eat as they walk around shops either. Nobody ever died of malnutrition while doing a trip to Tesco.

jimmenycricket · 21/08/2012 08:14

Did you not have a fag while you were waiting at the fish counter as well?

NCForNow · 21/08/2012 08:18

You should all stop eating whilst shopping. That's not nice.

Kabooooom · 21/08/2012 08:18

What QuickLook said.

gazzalw · 21/08/2012 08:20

I think you are on slightly dodgy ground going into a shop eating something that may or may not have been picked up from the shelves of that shop without being paid for.

As an adult would assume that you could eat either before you went into the shop or wait until you'd finished your shopping.

I wouldn't dream of eating anything in a shop as an adult. No hunger is going to be life threatening unless you have type one diabetes.

I might give the DCs something to eat en route to supermarket shopping but would either ensure that they'd finished before we entered (if it was something that we could potentially be accused of 'stealing') or to hurry up and eat it up (if it was something that had clear branding from another supermarket).

Personally, think a lot of security guards are jobsworths and it does seem to me that they delight in wielding their power (and Mums are an easy target) - don't give them the satisfaction!

AGilchrist · 21/08/2012 08:25

Ffs stop eating while you shop or expect to be spoken to its really rude.
I can get over small kids eating in supermarkets, they are kids.
Op you are either taking the loss or are rude.

jimmenycricket · 21/08/2012 08:26

People do get hungry in supermarkets. This is why a lot of them have cafes.

Shinyshoes1 · 21/08/2012 08:35

Yabu and rude
He was just doing his job .

Like the "let's walk and do this " Grin

samandi · 21/08/2012 08:59

YABU, you should have eaten in the car. Eating in a shop is stupid and rude.
