Before I get flammed I haven't done this and I'm not thinking about doing this. Just wondering why its such a big no no on MN.

Coz it's against da roolz innit

Sirzy · 20/08/2012 21:01

I think in general if you want to discuss something about a thread then you should do it on that thread.

Kayano · 20/08/2012 21:04

However 'inspired by another thread'

And 'didn't want to derail another thread but a similar topic'

Etc is fine

'boo hoo someone was mean I me on another thread' is by fine

Kayano · 20/08/2012 21:04

Is not* fine

PavlovtheCat · 20/08/2012 21:04

Because Thems The Rules.

KellyElly · 20/08/2012 21:07

I see thank you for enlightening me. I'll have a read of these rules just in case I break them by accident :)

Because it's boring, clogs the boards up, and is pretty bitchy, like talking behind someone's back.

sittinginthesun · 20/08/2012 21:11

And, I assume because, if a thread is deleted, the last thing MNHQ want is someone starting another thread about it.

HecateHarshPants · 20/08/2012 21:21

It's also seen as a bit bitchy and/or cowardly.

If someone doesn't like something that's on a thread they have two choices. They can address it on the thread, or they can start a different thread, with their own spin and the clear intention of getting people who weren't part of the original thread on their 'side'

That's a ridiculous, petty and childish thing to do.

Taking something from a thread and discussing it as a different issue so as not to hijack the thread, but not doing it as a dig at the other thread is something else altogether and a really good idea, I agree with Kayano.

Intention is key.

bitch and gripe - not on
discussion of a separate issue touched on on the thread - fine

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 20/08/2012 21:22

Rules is rules

ErikNorseman · 20/08/2012 21:23

I was a victim of Fred about a fredding and it was really upsetting. I had people calling me a cyber bully based on what poster was saying I said, which was entirely unfair.

KellyElly · 20/08/2012 21:58

So basically as long as its not trying to take a snipe at the original OP or someone posting on there its ok then. I read the guidelines (which I hadn't up until now) and was interested in the bit about trollhunting as lots of people accuse OPs of being fake. Some clearly are bored teenagers but sometimes they seem genuine. But either way this is also not really allowed but it happens quite a bit.

OP posts:
HecateHarshPants · 20/08/2012 22:04

Yes. so someone accusing you of being a troll, ie not being genuine, would be told off. As they would be if they started with the 'oh, I don't think you're a newbie really' stuff.

Which happens a lot when someone purports to be new but appears to have some sort of agenda or be very very familiar with mn for someone who only just stumbled across it. you're supposed to report and not engage directly.

some people still do, obviously. And that's troll hunting. Challenging those who are clearly shit stirring, lying or trying to cause hurt or get cash or who have some other agenda for their post.

It's all very complicated and really it's best to just stick to the lighthearted chat.

Much easier all round.

OlympiaMumsnet · 20/08/2012 22:06

here are our guidelines for anyone else who hasn't read them.

OlympiaMumsnet · 20/08/2012 22:07

And if you see anything that concerns you, just hit the report button.
Takes literally seconds. You can say as much or as little as you like and we will take a look.
Simples.
