to think that just because I pay for the cleaner, my flatmates should still clean up?

i live in London, its not ideal sharing but, its what I do and there's no escaping that. Both perfectly nice flatmates, one works funny hours and spends all his time off at the gym the other is a 9-5 person. I work 3-4 12 hour shifts a week, sometimes days, sometimes nights. Im not the biggest fan of spending my days off cleaning so, we have a cleaner. Ive lived here along time and Ive known her for years. She's not the best but she does the jobs we dont do. And, thats it really. When the rent went up they both said they were no longer willing to pay for the cleaner, I told them that in that case I would pay for her but they needed to clean up in between. That has not happened. They arent filthy, their bedrooms are immaculate but, for instance, she comes in the morning and the kitchen bin is practically overflowing I only emptied it two days ago because they know she is coming in the morning. I just put one of them loo blocks in and under the rim is full of yellow pee, neither of them go near it. Of course she will tomorrow.

When I tackled them they said I used the living room more than anyone I do and the one that also does shifts said he eats at work and doesnt cook so why should he clean the kitchen. Thats not your chicken in the oven right now, then?

I cant stop paying her, I need her Smile honestly I try to keep on top but she does get in the nooks and crannys when Im around I have just been to the supermarket and once again spent a fortune on cleaning products because they never get any. Maybe I should ask them for £15 amonth for "products" and use it to put towards the cleaner.

they should clean for the same time you pay for a cleaner. they should also pay a proportion of the cost of the cleaning products.

if they won't agree to this - which seems fair - then you have to accept living with mean dirty pigs or move. or keep a record for a week or two of who actually cooks what (if this is the main problem) and show them. presumably they still wee in the toilet even if they do shift work?

Mind you even the cleaner is getting on my nerves shes turned up the past two weeks when we've had builders in, even when Ive told her not to and then come around asking to be paid!!

Why don't they pay for the cleaner as well? As a veteran flat sharer, this is what would seem fair to me.

dreamingofsun · 20/08/2012 18:43

i imagine she still has rent to pay and therefore needs the money. probably can't find a replacement customer for just a couple of weeks?

ThesearemySaladdays · 20/08/2012 18:43

I need to get them both in at the same time and talk to them.

I think you need to tell them that you are stopping the cleaner if they don't contribute, because you feel they are taking the piss. Out of you AND her. ffs, poor woman. Why the hell should she clean up someone's urine?!

and that when you do, they needn't think that you will do the cleaning yourself.

And it gives you the ideal excuse to get rid of her too, if I am reading it right that you aren't happy - sorry, my flatmates won't contribute to your pay and I just can't do it by myself. And it is not fair that I am paying for a cleaner to clean mess we are all making.

Your flatmates will be pissed off that they now have to clean, and perhaps will appreciate having a cleaner more.

atm, they don't care, do they? you have a cleaner, you still want one whether they pay or not.

Make them care. Make them realise the effect you stopping this will have on them.

Talk about cleaning rotas.

Well, Im away for two weeks beginning of September. Last time I went away for the week, the builders had just finished so I asked them to pay whilst I was away and what happens? they dont and I have double the bill when I get back. Im in tomorrow so I will be up at 730 when she gets here.

£15 amonth is that too much from three people?
