To think that playmobil is flimsy shite

I don't get playmobil. Ds1 is just 4. For Xmas he got a playmobil pirate ship and playmobil aeroplane. Despite very careful playing all the sails have come off the ship except one and the wings and tail fin of the aeroplane fall off if you so much as look at it. Plus, it doesn't do anything, it's just a big lump of plastic. He got playmobil figures for his birthday, their hats fall off, their swords won't stay in their hands etc etc.
He also got Lego for his birthday, it's fantastic, durable, creative, wonderful stuff.
So whats the point of the playmobil? Am I missing something?

It doesn't do anything?? Yes it does... Use your imagination to 'do' whatever you fancy!!

naturalbaby · 19/08/2012 18:10

I got my 4yr old a big playmobil boat for his birthday because I thought it would suit us better with younger ones in the house - lego seems too small and fiddly for now. So far the just pull it all apart but I really like it, and prefer it to lego at the moment.
Sell it on ebay if you're not impressed - there seems to be demand and good prices paid.

rainbowinthesky · 19/08/2012 18:11

Ha ha about it doesnt do anything. DD (8) has spent 6 hours today and still going strong playing with her playmobil upstairs.

FallenCaryatid · 19/08/2012 18:12

Confused Our playmobil is fantastic no problem with swords and hats or bits falling off, and we've had it for around 12 years. Pirate ship is doing well too.
Are you sure your DS has the motor skills to click the bits together firmly enough?
Glad lego suits you, we have a load of that too.

BlackberryIce · 19/08/2012 18:12

It's the most played with toy any of my lot have ever had tbh!

Everythingsgoingtitsup · 19/08/2012 18:12

But imagination is surely more constrained by a preformed lump of plastic than by making whatever you want? Does anyone else find playmobil flimsy?

Read the threads on mumsnet playmobil antics!

Then come back and say it doesn't do anything.

MummyDoIt · 19/08/2012 18:13

Imagination is the point of Playmobil. My two will spend hours, setting up elaborate games and acting out stories with the people. Yesterday they spent about three hours in the paddling pool with a pirate ship, an Egyptian ship, a spy car and several police vehicles, all with corresponding people. I'd love to know the plot that centred around that cast of characters!

Everythingsgoingtitsup · 19/08/2012 18:14

No, ds doesn't have the motor skills to build the playmobil properly yet, I built the models for him. Perhaps I don't have the motor skills Blush

I think 4 is a bit young for playmobile ds3 is 6 and just beginning to play with it. My nephew got the pirate ship for a birthday but he would have been 7 or 8. He loved it. Put it away for a couple of years.

Silibilimili · 19/08/2012 18:14

I find play mobile flimsy for the amount of money you have to pay for it.

Love Lego and Lego duplo.

ThisIsNotHoneyDragon · 19/08/2012 18:15

FGS
Do not let NormanTheForeman see this!!!!!!! Sad

Henbur · 19/08/2012 18:16

Playmobil is fantastic, the age group is 4-10 so there are elements that they grow into, we have dinosaurs and DS has had loads of imagjnitive play, eating trees, other dinos volnano erupting etc. he hasn't paid any attention to the explorers and we have taken out the the little guns and binoculars etchead they are too small and will get lost or swallowed by his brother who's 1. I am really happy with the playmobil he's not tired of it yet and he's only 3 he may get into the small bits as his role play develops. Duplo Lego also very popular in our house!

BlackberryIce · 19/08/2012 18:21

Duplo? That's for toddlers... How can you compare it?

Everythingsgoingtitsup · 19/08/2012 18:22

Ds has proper Lego, not duplo.

Mine did not get on with Playmobil. Lego, they love. Playmobil, they just render into the smallest pieces possible and scatter around the house. We sold it on ebay, used the money to get more Lego.

MegBusset · 19/08/2012 18:35

Some Playmobil is sturdy and great. Some does fall apart at the drop of a hat (I'm looking at you, Playmobil castle). Mine play with both but prefer Lego as they love building their own robots/machines/aliens/whatever.

MegBusset · 19/08/2012 18:36

And they still love Duplo, even the older one (they are 3 and 5)

TiggyD · 19/08/2012 18:37

It's not so good for 4 year olds unless they are very careful. Wait until they're 6.

Keep buying Lego.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 19/08/2012 18:37

The pirate ship in particular drives me crazy - the sails ping off if you look at them funny. I'm freecycling it this week.

FallenCaryatid · 19/08/2012 18:38

You will make someone's year with that ER!

creamteas · 19/08/2012 18:43

We had the castle, it was rubbish and kept falling apart so I super-glued it! It still fell apart but less often Grin. Lego was much, much better.

lecce · 19/08/2012 18:52

Ours just falls apart at the drop of a hat - I know it's not the most expensive but the deep sea diving bell is the shittest, most flimsiest toy EVER. The recycling lorry falls aprt whenever you try to, you know, recycle stuff.

Lego ds is really getting into and he still likes the toddler stuff. Not sure about the imagination potential of playmbile - ds can play for hours with a skipping rope, a broken fishing net and a notebook - he is imaginative. Playmobile doesn't seem to do much for him and I'm gald we're not the only ones, tbh.

TheCrackFox · 19/08/2012 18:56

I think playmobile is flimsy and overpriced. Lego a huge hit in this house.

Ample · 19/08/2012 19:02

We love Lego but Playmobil is the best thing ever in our house
