To have sat down on a "saved" bench

We took the dc to an adventure playground this week. When we got there it started throwing it down so everyone ran fi cover. There was a wooden shelter with some benches around the edges. Obviously there were no seats do people were standing, leaning against the bench etc.

We were eating a picnic lunch so we did the best we could standing up

When the rain cleared and the kids went off to play I became aware that one of the benches had become free but there were bags on it and underneath it. The bench next to it had a woman sitting on one half and bags on the other half. Another woman was perched on the arm of the "empty" bench as she couldn't sit down.

After about 10 mins i saw that some of the bags had been moved slightly, the woman sitting had been visited by her friend and child who had taken something out of the bag and then gone off again without sitting down so I made my way to the empty bench and squished on the corner. There were bags at my feet which I didn't touch so it was a squash. I managed to squish up enough to let the woman perched on the arm sit down

Well I got daggers glared at me from the woman taking up two seats on the bench next to me. When her friend came back again about 10-15 mins later she said to me "I was sitting there". The first woman said I tried to tell her. All our stuff is on and underneath that bench

I was calm I didn't rise to the bait just said calmly you cannot expect to save two benches )4 seats) for all that time when people are standing. Originally there had been mums trying to feed babies/more elderly/infirm looking grandparents etc none of them able to sit down.

AIBU as she they obviously thought I was. I just ignored her and carried on reading my paper only standing up when someone who I felt needed a seat more than me came along. Can you save seats in that way ( though why they needed 4 seats for 2 people us beyond me as the kids did nothing more than pop back for the odd drink etc

Hmmm. Bench etiquette varies wildly from sunlounger etiquette doesn't it?

littlemisssunny · 18/08/2012 14:06

YANBU, taking up 2 benches for one person sitting down is! I probably wouldn't have dared saying anything though, wish I had more guts to say something sometimes!

One place abroad, can't remember where, any towels which were on sun loungers to reserve them, but no-one about, had a member of staff go around and throw them in the swimming pool which was rather funny!

unfortunately you get ignorant people like this. i've come across people saving slots in a car park till their friends arrive, and also a seat on a tube that was so full there was hardly room to stand. they are also they type of person who is the first to complain

toofattorun · 18/08/2012 14:21

I would have replied, "was being the operative word!"
You were definitely NBU.

germyrabbit · 18/08/2012 14:25

i did this in a coffee shop a while back, was empty so i sat at a table that had an old magazine on it, apparently this meant it was saved.

i just laughed at the madness of someone doing that and let them have their special place

wellwisher · 18/08/2012 14:26

YANBU. I would have moved the bags and plonked down immediately, not made my dc eat lunch standing up!!!

EngTech · 18/08/2012 14:27

I would have sat down and "discussed" it if they argued

Possession is 9/10 ths of the Law in my book

I do the same on trains when people have a rucksack on the seat next to them, they move the rucksack as I have paid for the ticket, the rucksack has not

naturalbaby · 18/08/2012 14:29

If the seat was empty, I would have sat on it too.

When heavy pregnant and bloody hot with low blood pressure last year with DS I sat on a saved bench. Completely empty but for 2 bags. Three women came back and glared/loud whispers/huffing.

We eventually settled on half the bench each. 2 women left but one was left sat right on the half way point.

So when DD1and 2 came back from playing in the paddling pool I let them sit on the bench with me. All huddled into half with DD1 swimsuit slowly wetting through woman's dress. Smile

At swimming yesterday one woman installed her possessions into one of the only two cubicles and once changed left them there while she walked across the room and started drying hair/doing makeup. Completely ignoring my mums 'ooh, umm, shall I, ooh umm, can I please, ooh umm' so I told her to just go in and get changed. Suddenly the woman became aware of my mum and rushed to take her things out of the cubicle before the door shut.

I follow my mother's motto in these instances (for full effect it has to be said in a ringing BBC accent):

"Oh dear, I hadn't realised your baggage was so tired. Only normally, it's bums what save seats. Not bags."
