Rape Jokes at Edinburgh Festival

So Denise34 you have time to sit and post here, but no time to back up what you say? why bother saying it then?

Do you honestly think political correctness is a bad thing? Do you really think it was better when people could say stuff like "nigger" or "paki" or slap women's arses in the street with impunity? Do you really think those times were better?

I don't go to these shows deliberately. However, I watch a lot of comedy, both on TV and live, and I can't control what people say. If something offends me, I'm going to comment on it. Why on earth wouldn't I?

anditwasallyellow · 18/08/2012 09:53

For all those who think 'it's just comedy' come back when you or someone you love has been raped, battered or even killed by an abusive partner, see how little help there is availabloe for the victim and how lacking the law is in protecting them and then see how funny you find these jokes which DO slowly normalise something horrific.

Denise34 Has anyone said you can't find that stuff funny? I don't think they have. You can chortle along to Jimmy Carr all you like.

There is a massive fucking difference between making a joke from a position of power. I know you probably don't think that there is a power difference between men and women, but I believe there is and therefore I don't find rape funny.

Bossybritches22 · 18/08/2012 09:58

I think the Edinburgh Fringe Commitee would be interested in our views.

Not as regards to censoring but if enough people walk out/ don't want an act then they will not book them next year & I don't think they'd want to be linked to rape apologists.

For those that feel strongly get writing!

I dont know anyone who finds this humour funny who actually thinks oooh rape is funny, lets go out and get some?

yellowraincoat · 18/08/2012 10:02

It really depends on what you mean by "acceptable" Denise34.

I wouldn't find a joke about that funny, I'd imagine.

But then I do find the Sarah Silverman joke at the end of the article funny, so it really depends on how it's done.

But then you don't even find Stewart Lee funny, so I doubt you'd really understand.

tittytitty, it's not quite as simple as that, no.

Do people still make racist jokes? Do people make jokes about, I don't know, going out and beating up Asian kids, or going out and murdering a black guy?

And if they don't why don't they?

cocolepew · 18/08/2012 10:05

Would these 'comedians'laugh if their gf, mum, sister, gran had been raped?

Rape is never funny.

I dont get why you find the Sarah Silverman joke funny? Is it funny that rape victims are to afriad to report their rape?

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 18/08/2012 10:11

A joke may be funny and simultaneously discriminatory. You can't say "oh it raised a smile so it must be ok."

anditwasallyellow · 18/08/2012 10:11

denise I'm not actually aware of any people dying in car crash jokes, and anyway the two aren't even comparable. There is a huge problem in the UK with rape not being reported and not being taken seriously. Prosecution rates are very low.

But then why do I get the feeling you read the Daily Mail a lot and probably think lots of women lie about rape.

The sarah silverman one is slighty different because she's actually highlighting a massive problem and is very cleverly mocking the people who find rape jokes funny.

shrodingerscat · 18/08/2012 10:22

The Silverman joke is meant to be ironic and bitter. Who are the masses that will complain about rape jokes? Rape victims you say? What, those same women who don't feel they can complain (to the police) about their own rapes? Ha ha, that's not likely then. Geddit? It's meant to highlight both the problem of victims not reporting their rape, plus the fact that the butts of these jokes are absolutely powerless.

Have to go out, will return to this later

BertieBotts · 18/08/2012 10:23

Hmm. But would the joke have been as funny if it had been "I was waiting for my mate to come round. Because I hit him really hard."

Same joke, same play on words, but somehow it doesn't have the same impact - and I think that does tell you something.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 18/08/2012 10:25

I took what SS said at the end of the article as a statement of fact not a joke.

But in general it is more acceptable for those discriminated against to use language that would be unacceptable for the powerful side to use eg black people using nigga, gay pe

Jokes about princess Diana are jokes about her, not general jokes about car crashes,
