To find really hot weather scary and restricting....

Whirliwig72 · 17/08/2012 21:57

...when in the mum of two small children with fair skin. My weather ap is showing temps in the mid 30's for tomorrow and we have been invited to a birthday party mid afternoon. Rather than relishing it you can bet I'll be the parent making her children come back into the house while the other less milky blue skinned kids frolic about happily in the paddling pool.
Even with factor 50 and hats on I'm not comfortable with them being out in such extreme heat and am thinking if not going.

Am I being an unreasonable kill joy?

OP posts:
PenisVanLesbian · 17/08/2012 23:57

heatstroke is a type of hyperthermia which can be fatal. Nausea, vomiting, headaches and diziness, culminating in hallucinations rapid pulse and loss of conciousness, followed by seizures and a coma if untreated.
Do you really get heatstroke in 30deg in the shade with a hat and factor 50? Hmm

DiscoDaisy · 17/08/2012 23:58

I find the hot weather stifling. My DS1 has asthma and he finds the hot weather far more difficult than the cold and damp winter weather.

BeehavingBaby · 17/08/2012 23:58

I find anything mid 20s and above really unpleasant TBH and worry about the children (who don't like it either - seems to be instinctive on their part but maybe I am being blind to my influence!). I don't worry so much actually as just avoid the sun completely! DD2 and I went quite pink on March 24th this year which shouldn't really be possible where we live.

BeehavingBaby · 18/08/2012 00:00

And it's definitely restrictive, esp as we don't drive.

MelanieSminge · 18/08/2012 00:00

also, while it may be much hotter in other countries, there is a hole in the ozone layer right above us which makes, say 30 degrees here much more savage than 40 plus in less industrialised countries.

PenisVanLesbian · 18/08/2012 00:11

not if you are in the uk there isn't. An ozone hole passed over briefly in the mid late 90's but there is no evidence of one now.

MelanieSminge · 18/08/2012 00:42

oh OK, I stand corrected.
still I have gone red and burnt in relatively mild sun here in the UK,but have been OK in Crete in August, up to 40 degs....

PenisVanLesbian · 18/08/2012 00:49

people are far more careful away than at home.

MelanieSminge · 18/08/2012 00:56

yeh that is true, in fact i was thinking that very thing as I was typing.

WilsonFrickett · 18/08/2012 01:01

As a 'blue' I don't exactly skip with joy when the sun comes out. But by following sensible precautions, like in your op, I don't let it rule my life either. 'there's no bad weather, just bad clothes'. Get the right kit for the conditions and don't let it restrict your life.

And the on,y time I burn these days is on cool-ish days in the uk, because I don't take any precautions.

CouthyMow · 18/08/2012 01:56

Penis, yes, I get hospitalised at least once a year with it despite my best efforts. It's bloody frustrating tbh.

CouthyMow · 18/08/2012 02:00

It is partly my colouring and partly that my meds for another issue can increase the likelihood of Heatstroke as a delightful side effect.

Right now I have the fan on full blast and am drinking a pint glass of water. I am also considering sleeping downstairs as it is cooler there. It is so hot that I cannot get to sleep.

TequilaMockinBird · 18/08/2012 09:03

I dunno who does the recording then 'cos I recorded it hotter than that Grin

Just on a relatively cheap digital thermometer mind!

spoonsspoonsspoons · 18/08/2012 09:14

Did you have your thermometer in the shade TequilaMockinBird?

I know lots of people who have recorded very high, record breaking temperatures on their thermometers placed in the sun Grin

OP YABU to think that the 'hot' weather we get in this country can be scary and restricting.

TequilaMockinBird · 18/08/2012 09:22

Oh. Erm, maybe Blush

PenisVanLesbian · 18/08/2012 09:28

Jesus thats bad, the heatstroke. I had it once and I thought I would die. I couldn't remember where I lived and collapsed in the street. people thought I was pissed and walked over me, I hadn't touched a drop.

Lilicat1013 · 18/08/2012 09:50

I find this weather really restricting as well, I am pregnant and epileptic. My son is currently being investigated for epilepsy so being out in the sun too much is no good for either of us.

I can't wait till it ends, it was on and off raining the other morning so we got the park to ourselves and spent ages outside. I realised how long it has been since we have been able to do that.

Trills · 18/08/2012 09:56

:O at Tequila's thermometer in the sun.

YABU and massively overreacting to find it scary that the temperature will be 30, especially since a paddling pool is good for cooling down.

Trills · 18/08/2012 09:56

:o I meant

JustSpiro · 18/08/2012 10:11

Can you check with the party hosts that there will be room for you to bring a buggy with hood/parasol for little one?

If they have children too one would assume they have some common sense re providing adequate shelter from the sun.

SailorSoldier · 18/08/2012 10:46

YANBU, 30 IS scary. If I see the weather report and it says it's going to be above about 23 (and that's pushing it) I am both annoyed and very anxious.

I get worried when I take DS out and it's hot. Partly because he's red-blond and very pale, but also because the heat makes both of us less aware and a bit fuzzy. I can barely concentrate when the temperature is above low twenties, and this is not good when you're the sole carer of an active two-year-old.

Also, to all those saying 30 "isn't hot", yes it effing is. If you spend your entire life in average temperatures that are half that, you're going to feel like you're melting. Foreign countries are a completely different issue, tbh.

Trills · 18/08/2012 10:47

30 isn't hot if you can sit in the shade near a paddling pool.

It is hot if you have to walk a long way with no shade.

iMoniker · 18/08/2012 10:54

30 degrees in the UK must feel like 40 degrees to those of us who lives in hotter climates. Add the fact that AC is not a likely feature in your homes - OP YADNBU!!

Here on the East coast of Australia it rarely drops below 24 degrees - even in the middle of the night in Summer. I nearly expired the first year we were here!

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 18/08/2012 12:36

I cannot sit in the sun at all, so with 31degrees forecast here today and tomorrow, I am sitting in my lovely cool kitchen for the weekend with lots of books.

busynotbored · 18/08/2012 14:12

i'm in sicily and it's 43 degrees at the mo. last week my friends car showed 51 but i presume that was the temp of the car outside. my kids have factor 50, drink loads and i keep their heads wet when they not i the sea. saying that though they are all olive skinned, i'd imagine u'd have to be even more careful with fair skin. is factor 50 the highest?
