I am using every ounce of self control I have to not go in to the kitchen.

He is baking a betty crocker devils food cake for my birthday tea tomorrow. I am used to him cooking. But baking is my thing and he really hasnt a clue.

I have had to talk him through it. But I want to just go and do it.

Am I the only one who gets this anxious over watching other people bake?

Sit down, and watch something, anything, rather than go and help.

I used to be like this until my husband was rather less than diplomatic about it.

It'll be gorgeous, even more so because he did it.

YABU

How's he going to learn ;-)

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/08/2012 15:24

Oh I know it will be nice and I love him so much for making the effort. I had to help him find the icing sugar for the icing but apart from that I am banished to the living room :o

Its just sooooo hard to sit here and not do anything :)

I am a really keen baker but devils food cake is the one thing I buy as it is out of this WORLD!!!! Mmmmmmm Grin

YABU - he is baking that is all!

WineGoggles · 17/08/2012 15:43

It's hard isn't it OP but you have to resist the urge to interfere (in the nicest sense) as I expect your DP would not like it. My BF cooked dinner once (he visits me so I tend to do it, but he wanted to spoil me) and he said there's nothing worse than being "supervised" when cooking for someone, so his policy is if he's cooking he has to be alone in the kitchen. I showed him where everything was, shut the door, put the TV on and left him to it. But the urge to check on him was strong, especially as he was taking ages!

NettOlympicSuperstar · 17/08/2012 15:44

valium, the recipe for DFC from Nigella's kitchen is really good, and that's coming from me, a terrible baker!

valiumredhead · 17/08/2012 15:45

Oh will look it up - thanks Nett Grin

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/08/2012 15:57

It has just come out of the oven and looks great. Hes all proud of himself!

Had a bit of a disaster with the icing but I blame the recipe. We still have plenty of time to make more.

One good thing about being banished...no dishes :)

just buy the BC chocolate fudge icing..it's luuuuverly...

Enfyshedd · 17/08/2012 16:12

DP was nervous enough the first time he made crumble mix (I was BFing DD on the sofa) - he brought the bowl over for me to check if he needed more flour (needed another spoonful), and about 45 mins later served up a pretty impressive apple crumble.

He won't go near a cake mix though, so I think the next homemade cake we have in this house will be the xmas cake...

BadgersRetreat · 17/08/2012 16:16

if it was my DH i'd be hiding in the living room cuddling the fire extinguisher... you know, just in case

redwineformethanks · 17/08/2012 20:39

Is this a stealth boast? - he's cooking & doing dishes?

Am very jealous

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/08/2012 20:56

Didnt intend it to be...

But after all the awful threads I have read lately about how horribly men have treated their partners, I guess its not a bad thing to sing the praises of the good men. :)

Why would it be a boast that a man is cooking/washing up?

I expect it will be a nice cake. Most cake is nice Grin

MammaTJisanOlympicSumoWrestler · 17/08/2012 20:58

If he can cook, he can follow a recipe, it will be fine!
