To wonder what the cons of swaddling are?

Just tried this for DS's nap today as he was flailing around & yowling. He's still sleeping over an hour later (would normally be awake by now).
I know it's not a new thing, but what is the modern wisdom on swaddling? Safe? Good sleeping habit? Etc

I used large muslin squares (aden and anais or tk maxx), so lovely and cool in this weather.

I and dd loved her being swaddled!

lighthousekeeping · 16/08/2012 15:45

I love the look of the Aden and Anais muslins but they are about £45!!!

I swaddled my babies as it helped them sleep so much better, even in the summer heat here. I use a thin muslin square and they would be dressed in a nappy and a thin undershirt, I also left their feet bare and hanging out the bottom. and swaddled so they could still curl up in a ball, so it was mainly to stop them flailing about their arms and waking themselves up.

DS has one of these No overheating because it is made of jersey material.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 16/08/2012 15:50

DS is 21 weeks and i haven't yet found a downside. I did worry because when he started to roll he would kick his legs up in the night and I thought he would try to roll while swaddled. As soon as he managed to roll in the day, he stopped doing this at night - I think he was practising in his sleep Grin

I use a swaddle me which is thin jersey, he still has some flexibility so I'm not worried about his hip position and it keeps him cool enough.

I'm starting to think about what comes next so I'm looking at the peke moe.

I'm a huge fan - it's saved my sanity!

i swaddled mine the boys all grew out of it by about 3mths? but dd loved it till she was about 15mths!

in hot weather just swaddled them in a nappy, maybe a vest and in a big muslin cloth, for a cheaper version than aiden and anis look for bigmuzz, they are plain white but you can dye them if you want them a different colour which i did, or tk maxx is good!

the issues with swaddling can be overheating, but you just need to be careful in hot weathe ri used a muslin and the rest of the time i used a cotton cot sheet and they would be in a vest or babygrow depending on temp.

you MUST make sure that when swaddled you babies legs are still int he froggy position and you dont swaddle their legs and hips tightly as this can cause problems, as long as you are careful its fine :)

PeshwariNaan · 16/08/2012 16:20

Swaddling is good for calming a baby, but you shouldn't keep the baby swaddled all day. Also, be careful to not restrict the movement of the hips and legs when swaddling - this can result in hip dysplasia.

Colicky babies often calm down a lot when swaddled, but not every baby likes swaddling. However it's a really useful tool.

I just read that RCM link, I sort of did a half swaddle, tucked in round the top and just left wrapped round the bottom IYSWIM. his legs would relax out no bother, it was the flailing arms it helped DS with, that and feeling secure I think.

5madthings · 16/08/2012 16:28

i dont think anyone is talking about leaving a baby swaddled all day! its normally only for sleeping, or it was for my dd.

ripsishere · 16/08/2012 16:38

My DD slept really well when she was swaddled. I used a length of cotton and she had no temperature issues. She was born in Muscat where the average temperature is 40+.
If she wasn't wrapped up, she jerked herself awake.

thegoatswife · 16/08/2012 16:39

Hmm @ anyone who says this weather is too hot. Really? It's nice and warm but it's not hot!

In the real heat you would swaddle your baby in a nappy, sleeveless singlet and a muslin wrap. You also would feed on demand/ more frequently. Have a fan and/or window open if thete is a breeze. I think swaddling is great for up to the first 3 months. I usually swaddle arms in at night and arms out during the day.

valiumredhead · 16/08/2012 16:41

Swaddling is fantastic imo - ds loved it.

WillSingForCake · 16/08/2012 16:49

My DD loved being swaddled. The only con I found was transitioning her out of it when she got too big (around the 4 month mark when she started to be able to roll). She was so used to sleeping swaddled, that took her a long time to get used to a grobag.

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 16/08/2012 17:22

Well we're on holiday where it's 35 degrees Grin
Thankfully we have aircon so DS is kept cool - normally just a nappy & sheet sleeping bag. If I were swaddling I'd imagine nappy & large muslin would suffice? not that I have one dammit

Depending on where you are holidaying, you may find either a material shop or gentlemans outfitters.
My DD was swaddled in the length of cloth an Omani man wears in place of underpants.

ontheedgeofwhatever · 16/08/2012 20:04

Well according to MW1 I will massively increase DSs chance of cot death if I swaddle him. According to MW2 - if he's not sleeping and its the only way he will then go ahead as he'll feel secure and its a very safe way to sleep.

Ive just finished reading a book set in 15th Century England and it mentioned that babies were swaddled onto boards and kept immobile unless being cleaned / changed. It also mentioned that the swaddling had a loop at the top over the head so that swaddled babies could be conveniently hung on a hook Shock Wonder what modern child protection professionals would make of that!

EasilyBored · 16/08/2012 20:20

I swaddled DS up until about a month ago (he's 7.5months), only his arms though. It helped him settle, but he got to a stage where he would fight it and wake up. It's worth a try, as long as you're careful about temperature and leaving their legs free.
