Has anyone else come across this term before???

.... I saw it in passing the other day and I have been chuckling about it ever since. I can think of many men in my life that fall into this category (starting with my FIL!!!)

YABU.

It's a sweeping generalisation.

I know quite a lot of women who are patronising and condescending in their attitudes to men.

... often on here in fact.

BigHairyFlowers · 15/08/2012 22:51

It does say "Either sex can be guilty of mansplaining."

BigHairyFlowers · 15/08/2012 22:53

I have no idea why I felt the need to point that out. Can I Hmm myself?

I am thinking of it CONSTANTLY while watching 'The Newsroom', every male character does it fucking constantly while the women stand before them gawping at the display of wisdom and intelligence.

It is an awesome phrase.

Either sex can be guilty of mansplaining - maybe so, but it's the mansplaining bit that makes the generalisation that men do this.

I happen to dislike sweeping generalisations - yes, there are some men who may do this when they talk about the finer points of the internal combustion engine or cricket or whatever.
But I hear/read about lots of women treating men like idiots too.

So, in conclusion - I think it's a stupid word.

The Newsroom is a TV show - it's not real life. I don't know anyone like the characters on The Newsroom (I have only seen two episodes mind).

Actually BigHairy - I think I may be agreeing with you. I may have misinterpreted your post
