To think this from the BBC isn't funny, it's quite sick

video

It's a video of the games 'most painful moments' set to quite a mocking tune, in the style of you've been framed. It includes the injury the hockey player go to her face and a German weightlifter with a 196kg weight falling on his neck.

I found it worrying to watch and really felt for some of the athletes, I wouldn't be surprised from some sources but I'm really surprised the BBC would think it was approriate to show in this format.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 14/08/2012 23:05

I think no one appeared to have sustained any real threataning injuries and it highlites the pain blood and sweat, The music is a bit naff, its from banana splits. It could have been done in better taste maybe but i dnit think its offensive.

hiddenhome · 14/08/2012 23:05

YANBU Sad

ThreadWatcher · 14/08/2012 23:09

I agree - had I come across it on youtube or a link from a newspaper like the Mail or the Sun I wouldnt have been surprised.

But very odd and out of character for the BBC.

I feel sorry for the athletes who trained for years to compete whose hopes were ruined in just a second or two like that - to be mocked in video compilation by the BBC must hurt.

CrispyCod · 14/08/2012 23:13

It made me appreciate the athletes a lot more to be honest. Just goes to show some of the things they have to endure to be world class.

Vagabond · 14/08/2012 23:14

What's the big deal? These video compilations are done all the time. I think it's great to see the ordeal some of these athletes have to go through rather than some airbrushed 'best of" sequences we always see. It's hardly mocking them,, it's applauding them. YABU!

NarkedRaspberry · 14/08/2012 23:16

YANBU at all. I loathe those kind of clips - I don't find it funny watching people being hurt - but accept that a lot of people do. I'm really surprised at the BBC doing this. I'd expect it to be on You Tube not the site of the Olympics broadcaster.

CrispyCod · 14/08/2012 23:18

It was shown a few times over the weekend on BBC1. Haven't heard of any complaints about it as yet.

NarkedRaspberry · 14/08/2012 23:27

Lots of people find those kind of clips of people being hurt funny. How many years has 'You've been framed' trundled on for? And You Tube is full of the same stuff.

geegee888 · 15/08/2012 00:19

YABU. Nasty things happen, including in sport. It gives more of the reality, as things do sometimes go wrong in life and it shows its not as easy as it looks. Would only be distasteful if anyone died or suffered life changing injuries. Man up, OP!

Presumably its on the BBC site because all the incidents were filmed by the BBC in real time and streamed live at the time.

ErikNorseman · 15/08/2012 07:44

I laughed Blush

fluffyraggies · 15/08/2012 07:51

I laughed at the divers - that bit tickled me for some reason Blush It's all usually so graceful.

The rest i frowned through. And thought "Ow" :(

FiveMonths · 15/08/2012 07:56

'I think no one appeared to have sustained any real threataning injuries'

Kate Walsh broke her jaw - is that not real enough?

I think it's really, really tasteless.

There are only a few programmes totally banned from being watched in this house. One is Hollyoaks, because it's sensationalist shit, as we all know, one is that dinner party thing where the adults all dress in stupid costumes and shout at each other, and one is You've been Framed, because I don't like to encourage my children to think that laughing at injured or unfortunate people is a good thing.

No difference I can see between this and YBF.
I notice they have another video entitled 'the funny side of the olympic Games' but I don't think I can be bothered to watch that.

FiveMonths · 15/08/2012 07:58

and God knows what happened to the weight lifter - the fact they covered the stage with a screen while someone came to help makes me think it wasn't particularly minor. FGS

Thumbwitch · 15/08/2012 08:02

So long as Ashia Hansen isn't shown on that - I'll never forget seeing her knee go out while she was doing a triple jump in competition, it was horrifying and clearly extremely bad.

I hate You've Been Framed, I hate people laughing when other people get hurt, and the weight lifter incident in the Olympics is just such another horrifying event - he could have had his neck broken by that weight, it was terrible!

WillNeverGetALicence · 15/08/2012 08:11

YANBU - although I haven't seen your particular clip [will watch in a moment] but BBC also did a compilation of the "funniest" moments set to Benny Hill theme tune whilst the Olympics were still going on.

I thought this was in really poor taste and quite mocking of the athletes.

I think it is too soon to do this really.

Perhaps an overall Olympics funniest moments of present and past years after the event would be one thing... but to start the laughing and finger pointing when the athletes have only just competed and had their hopes and dreams broken so recently [and in such a public fashion]... It seems cruel and unnecessarily humiliating.

Not kind or decent thing to do imo. Wouldn't have expected it from the BBC, more Nuts magazine or something.

Northernlurker · 15/08/2012 08:14

I think there are some rather po-faced reactions here. I saw this video on the Olympics tonight programme and as I recall Gabby Logan introduced it as showing what happens when things go wrong. What music do you want them to set it too? The Funeral March? I think if you find that 'worrying to watch' that says mor about your state of mind than the material tbh.

That said, Kate Walsh was seriously hurt and I agree it might have been more tasteful to leave her out. Everybody else was basically fine. There was a judo bout where one party passed out during a strangulation hold. You'll notice they didn't show that.

WillNeverGetALicence · 15/08/2012 08:15

And yes, some athletes were actually really hurt. Wow, that's hilarious! Hmm

I also wonder what happened to the weighlifter Sad

WillNeverGetALicence · 15/08/2012 08:17

Or perhaps those that don't see a problem show their lack of sensitivity Northenlurker

I don't have any issues with my state of mind thanks anyway.

SoupDragon · 15/08/2012 08:19

"and God knows what happened to the weight lifter - the fact they covered the stage with a screen while someone came to help makes me think it wasn't particularly minor. FGS"

Well, the fact that he stood up and raised an arm into the air in a salute points towards the fact that it was minor. FGS.

Northernlurker · 15/08/2012 08:21

The weightlifter was able to get to his feet once the weight was moved and suffered no serious injury here

SoupDragon · 15/08/2012 08:24

And, whilst the injury was a complex fracture, Kate Walsh continued to play in the olympics after having her jaw pinned/plated and she felt no different after having the plate fitted.

Northernlurker · 15/08/2012 08:27

I don't think it shows 'a lack of sensitivity' to not be distraught at the sight of some minor incidents. Nobody was decapitated and in terms of 'dreams being shattered' - well that's inevitable. They give out 1 gold medal per event. Most people's Olympic dreams will be shattered whether they fall on their arse or not.
I think hand-wringing over this video is absud tbh.

Soupdragon - I didn't know she had said she felt no different. That's good. I was really impressed she got back out there to compete.

PooPooOnMars · 15/08/2012 08:33

". . . found it worrying to watch"

Oh bless your cottons Hmm

spoonsspoonsspoons · 15/08/2012 08:34

Kate Walsh won a bronze did she not? Not really dreams shattered.

Thumbwitch · 15/08/2012 08:35

The weight lifter has suffered ligament and muscle injuries to his neck. That's not insignificant.
