I live in a block of flats. A man and a woman just came and knocked, and when I answered he said, 'hello, can I come and look at where you keep your recycling please?'

So, funnily enough, I stammered a bit and said I was sorry but no, why would he ask that? And he turned to the woman and said 'well, they're all council flats here?', and she said yes. So he asked again.

Is it really true if you live in a council flat someone could turn up with no notice and ask to look at your recycling?! I thought that was really rude.

My block is one of those where some have been sold off from the council, so I said we rent privately and I wasn't going to let him in, but he was quite shirty and rude and he's been knocking on my door after I shut it.

Is it a scam, do you think, or do people really do this?! Confused

If they were going to look at your recycling, it would be on collection day, at the curb. Logically speaking.

Although, I think the councils that did that were told off and it's not allowed anymore iirc.

tethersphotofinish · 14/08/2012 16:03

Even if they were from the council, they still need to give notice to enter your property.

ginmakesitallok · 14/08/2012 16:10

What you do or don't do with recycling inside your home is noone.s business! Council can only look at stuff put out for collection.

OwlLady · 14/08/2012 16:11

i hadn't realised they wanted to come in Confused

tethersphotofinish · 14/08/2012 16:13

Good point, gin- it's only recycling one it's outside ready for collection. Until then it's just your stuff.

ThreadWatcher · 14/08/2012 16:17

It is nobodys business where you keep your recycling regardless of who you rent from or whether you own your home.
I would call the police.

CrispyCod · 14/08/2012 16:18

Nobody has the right to turn up at your door and do this. Don't be surprised though if it is the council. This is something that my council would do, they're a bunch of Feckwitts.

Bumblebee333 · 14/08/2012 16:33

This is very worrying indeed. Have you spoken to the council?

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 15/08/2012 19:34

What happened in the end?

HighJumpingHissy · 15/08/2012 19:37

I would call the Police actually - call 101

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/08/2012 19:38

Geniune, apparently. Rather to my surprise. Apparently they was a letter pinned to the noticeboard downstairs which I should have seen (not sure why I should, since there are three doors and only a noticeboard by one of them Hmm). I'm not wild about it and would tell them to go away again, but both my neighbours I managed to speak to thought I was being a bit daft. Ah well.

high - it was yesterday, it's all over and done with now! But thanks. I didn't end up calling the council because my neighbour pointed out there's a note on the noticeboard saying they were coming and the time, so obviously it was real.

^But why would they need to look at your recycling in your flat? Surely before it's put out for collection, it's still your belongings? Bizarre.

CurlyKiwiControl · 15/08/2012 19:43

Another vote to call 101. Sounds very odd and suspicious indeed.

I recently had to call 101 with regards to a nutter driving like a maniac with a license to kill, going so fast I couldn't even get his whole reg, but they were lovely (I was worried I may of being wasting their time) and if in doubt about anything again ibwoukd not hesitate to call.

You may save someone more vunerable than you

CurlyKiwiControl · 15/08/2012 19:46

oops sorry x-post Blush

still though, i would echo my thoughts about ringing 101 if anyone felt they needed too, but were umming and arring ...
