To think that if you do an online insurance quote you don't want to speak to anyone?

Plus if it was a good deal you would have accepted the quote?

I did an Admiral multi car quote two days ago online. It was more expensive than what I had.

So far I have had an email reminding me of my quote and an 0800 number has been ringing the landline off the hook. I have googled the number and it's Admiral/Elephant. I am not answering it. They rang 4 times yesterday and just had the first one today.

I don't get it. I know it will be some salesman with targets if I answer.

Not acceptable at all. Absolutely if I do an online quote, I don't expect or want to be called, emailed or bothered in any way. Which is why I never give the correct name or contact details, only the other stuff that would be relevant to the quote....

Answer once and tell em to bog off.

NameGames · 14/08/2012 10:04

YANBU. But they are probably calling to offer you a lower quote (because, as you say, that salesperson does have a target). You could decide how much you are prepared to pay. Listen to him/her for a few minutes and then say, "look, it was too expensive, I'm prepared to pay £x. I'm going to put you on hold for 5 minutes while I make a cup of tea. If you can offer me that rate when I come back to you I'll take it." Then go and make a cup of tea.

DilysPrice · 14/08/2012 10:06

There's usually a box (hidden) for you to tick to opt out of calls.
I'd answer it once, and say either "no, not interested" or "only interested if you can quote me less than £xxxxx" (well worth a try).

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2012 10:06

Yes, I think I will have to answer eventually.

You always have to give your landline number and can't skip that field.

I was going to get a few more quotes but don't think I will bother.

I make numbers up. I find no matter how many boxes you tick etc, your details still get used. So I basically give no real contact details. If I like the quote and want to take it, I start over giving my correct details.

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2012 10:15

I'm just an old grouch. I was in a bad mood yesterday for no reason. i should just answer and be polite.

Do you know why I could never be a SAHP - the poxy cold calls all bloody day. I'm TPS Registered and exdirectory. They do my bloody head in.

RubyFakeNails · 14/08/2012 10:23

I always do an online quote and then speak to them. Every time I do my car/home/travel insurance, it has reduced massively, even halved sometimes when I've phoned and pushed little points. That was with Diamond, LV and M&S I think.

RubyFakeNails · 14/08/2012 10:24

Forgot to say YANBU though they shouldn't call you. I typically do it on compare the market then go with the top few and get the option to call them, not them to call you.

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2012 10:27

It's quite weird for our landline to ring this much. We all have mobiles and the landline is largely redundant.

I always answer 'WITHHELD' in case it's Docs/Hosp/School. But never answer O845, 0800, or the dreaded 'INTERNATIONAL'.

I doubt the person on the other end enjoys outbounding. It's the worst thing ever. Just answer it and let them know where you are at with it and if they can't do anything they will leave you alone...until next year.

Ephiny · 14/08/2012 10:36

It immediately puts me off a company if they keep hassling me with phone calls like that. Call once, and if no one picks up, leave a message and I'll get back to you if/when I want to.

I don't use the landline much either. Often I don't bother answering as it'll only be either cold callers (or MIL!). Anyone I might actually want to speak to has my mobile number.

MsNobodyAgain · 14/08/2012 10:39

I'm with the TPS. I never put my true home number in any online quote or price comparison websites. I have a 'junk' e-mail address that they can send crapola to.

Sallyingforth · 14/08/2012 11:03

I work from home and have to answer the landline.
I use one of these to stop sales calls and it's brilliant.

Salyingforth, that's BRILLIANT! Thank you. I want one too.

TPS is completely useless as it doesn't cover overseas calls, and all call centres seem to be overseas based now, and if they aren't, the callers always pretend they dont know, say they won't ring you again but still DO keep ringing you.

TPS doesn't cover surveys either, and all cold callers now seem to use that loophole, even if the "survey" is "Do you want double glazing?"
