have just dressed him in his first school uniform, and suddenly found myself bereft that hes growing up so fast,
hating the idea that he'll experience firsts at school and i wont be there to share, he wont need me anymore!

i know im being selfish an unreasonable but omg i need him clearly more than he needs me

No YANBU - the thought terrifies me and I still have 2 years to go! ;-)
Just think of it this way - all that hard work you have done to make him the human being he is today and got him to this point and whne he sails through school, you'll know that was because of you! :-)

Littlebluetoo · 13/08/2012 20:15

Mine starts at secondary this Sept, so I can empathise. Wait till his first Nativity and be prepared to be a gibbering wreck!

MamaBear17 · 13/08/2012 20:16

YANBU. You have so much brilliant stuff to come though, and he will need you! Who else is going to hold his hand when he is nervous on the first day? Who else will cheer him on at sports day? Give him cuddles when he has had a bad day? Help him with his reading homework? Hang his pictures on the fridge? Pack his lunch just the way he likes it? Im 29 and I still need my mum! [smile}

numbum · 13/08/2012 21:19

I was the same when my DD (youngest DC) started school last year. I can assure you he will still need you, it's just a different kind of need

ILiveInAPineapple · 13/08/2012 21:21

I feel the same, my DS is due to start school in September :-( its not because I will miss him - I'm at work all day and he's been in full time nursery since he was 1- it's more that he won't be my baby any more! But he is desperate to go to "big school" so I can't help but also burst with excitement for him!

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 13/08/2012 21:23

I have my PSB home for a few days, yesterday I was like a kid in a candy store waiting to see if he turned up in his little car or not. My BFB has gone away to Cornwall for a few days so it's been lovely having just DS home.

I still need my kids more than they need me and the kids are 20 and 22.

PS-He will always need his mum, my DS is 20 but he still needs me from time to time.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 13/08/2012 21:23

PFB even

MammaTJisanOlympicSumoWrestler · 13/08/2012 22:26

I felt like this about my DS, not PFB but PLB!! He is my baby and always will be.

He has survived reception and had a starring role in the nativity, my friends still take the piss at my sobbing!!

Heading for year one, with a wanna be wife and lots of GFs. I think he has settled in!

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 22:30

I remember feeling like that Grin

But believe me, he'll need you just as much...if not more so don't worry about that.

Just enjoy the peace and quiet!

lovebunny · 13/08/2012 22:32

walked past the local prep today, with daughter and grandaughter, noting that they start at three and baby is already nine months old...

Broodymomma · 13/08/2012 23:45

I so understand. My ds is our hard earned ivf baby that I gave birth to yesterday in my mind. In reality he is 5 and the alarm is set for his first day at school tomorrow. I already miss him and feel like I am loosing him. Totally nuts I know and I will plaster on the smile and hold his hand until he is ready to let go but god I am dreading it. Hope it goes ok for you both x

trixymalixy · 13/08/2012 23:50

YANBU. My PFB starts school on Wednesday. I wish I could just keep him at home until he's just a wee bit older!!

waterlego6064 · 13/08/2012 23:56

Oh, I get you OP. When my own PFB had been at school for a couple of weeks, I walked past the school one day and saw her in the playground, she was busy and didn't see me. I stood there watching her for a while, in this whole little world that was hers and that I had no part in and I felt like I'd lost something. Walked home with my eyes swimming with tears.

And in about 4 weeks I will have to surrender my PLB to school and I will no doubt blub again.

It'll be ok though. Lots of fun times to come, for you both.

AgentZigzag · 14/08/2012 00:00

Same as LittleBlue and DD1 starts secondary soon, and I also had a lump in my made-of-stone throat at her first nativity.

They do look very small in such a big uniform though, when they get older and you forget how 4/5 YOs are, you can't believe they let such littlies in [awww]

boringnamechange · 14/08/2012 00:08

Dd1 starts on Wednesday and just had a little sob at your OP. can't believe she is growing up so quickly and how grown up she looks in her uniform.

PatFenis · 14/08/2012 00:18

Yes I remember that feeling and I was heartbroken when my PFB went to school in his uniform, I cried my leg off but when he came home all smiley and proud of himself I was even weepier! He is 21 now and a big strong man ...that makes me proud too Grin

ColourMeWithChaos · 14/08/2012 00:21

My eldest is 18.

He has a job.

He has a girlfriend.

He even cooks for himself.

My PFB doesn't need me at all anymore [blub]

except for when he loses his car keys or needs picking up from the train station or he can't get a stain out of his work clothes

CatholicDad · 14/08/2012 00:23

Hell

Your son is one of the Pet Shop Boys? confused

pumpkinsweetie · 14/08/2012 00:31

Yanbu, i feel the exact same way about my dd3, shes not even a pfb.
Going to really miss her when she starts fulltime infant school this septSad
She's still my baby and has bad speech problems so we have to communicate through play etc, really nervous about her going as i will then know she is growing up iyswimSad.

FuckityFuckFuck · 14/08/2012 00:34

YANBU

PFB DS decided he wanted to test run his nursery uniform the other week. I felt like crying :(

Today he has been an utter monster and I am quite looking forward to 3 hours peace a day :o

laurenamium · 14/08/2012 00:43

This made me cry and DD is only 20 months! Blush definitely time for bed...

uselfullife · 14/08/2012 00:53

I'll come back next week, when I have bought the uniform
Feel ok about it right now

Flobbadobs · 14/08/2012 07:34

YANBU. My DC's went to nursery from 18 months old but the first day of school made me howl. DS starts high school in September and I know I'll start again! Agree about the nativity, start stocking up on tissues..

NumericalMum · 14/08/2012 07:41

My DC has been at nursery virtually full time since 9 months but the thought of her starting school in 3 weeks makes me want to sob.
