How fivegomad? Please explain, cos we're obviously too dim to work it out Hmm.

fivegomadindorset · 13/08/2012 00:16

No it shouldn't be the same event as that is patrosnising for everyone concerned.

Share the same event as they use the same facilities and yes I would h=guess that Oscar Prestorius may ahve been ther etonight.

ekidna · 13/08/2012 00:17

I hope some day the Olympics will be as one.
It will

KnittingAnOlympicGold · 13/08/2012 00:18

Why is it patronising? I'm not suggesting that the able-bodied and disabled athletes compete in the same races, but during the same contest.

I utterly fail to understand how that is patronising to anyone tbh.

But you're quite a master in being patronising so maybe you can explain?

fivegomadindorset · 13/08/2012 00:19

Why should Usain Bolt compete against someone who is registered blind?

KnittingAnOlympicGold · 13/08/2012 00:20

Oh and Prestorius isn't a Paralympic athlete is he because he competes in this Olympics - can't compete in both.

fivegomadindorset · 13/08/2012 00:20

So expian to me why? Actually don't as I am gong to hide this one.

KnittingAnOlympicGold · 13/08/2012 00:22

I just explained, in very simple language, that I wasn't for one moment suggesting that the disabled and able-boded compete in the same races, just in the same Olympics.

Not difficult to understand is it?

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 00:28

THEY HAVE THEIR OWN OPENING AND CLOSING CERMONIES< WHERE HAVE YOU LOT BEEN FOR TEH LAST 20 YEARS>?

This ^^

MuddlingMackem · 13/08/2012 00:30

YANBU. DH has said the same thing.

We agree with others here who say that there shouldn't need to be two separate tournaments, there should just be one tournament with all of the sporting events from the two current events taking place within it.

Will be quoted in a wtf how discrimatory was this looking back book

SlackSally · 13/08/2012 01:13

Erm, Oscar Prestorius IS in the paralympic games.

Not sure why people are so up in arms. Paralympics is a separate event. Different to the olympics. It's not 'not inclusive' to celebrate it separately. Paralympians have different events, that's the whole point of it. Or are you advocating complete inclusion? So the athletes with disabilities compete in the mainstream events?

Because then hardly any of them would be there...

I can't see how having paralympic events running alongside olympic events would raise the profile, if anything i'd think events could get sidelined. Having separate games gives it s far bigger profile

forevergreek · 13/08/2012 09:44

Because otter wise another x amount of paraolympics athletes would hae to have arrived weeks ahead to attend opening and then the Olympic athletes who have now finished would have to stay another 3 weeks. As people have said, simply not enough space and too much time away for many.

They simply can't do together b easily as much as they would hope to as the stadiums have to be changed in between to accommodate ( ie I believe wider running lanes as will need to accomadate wheelchairs, the athletic markers are brought forward ( as again javelin in a chair is obv harder to get such a huge distance as lack of height)

Many reasons. One day they will be together but then will the paraolympics be disadvantaged?

doublevodkaandcoke · 13/08/2012 09:50

I was thinking the other day that it would be nice to have a 4 week Olympics/Paralympics, and just have the events interspersed with each other.

However, I just dont think it would be logistically possible. The Olympic Village would have to be twice as big to accomodate all of the athletes and for 4 weeks as well which would cost loads more money. Also, I am not an expert, but I would imagine that for paralympic events the venues may need to be modified and couldnt be changed quickly.

They are two separate events so the Olympics is over now hence the flag being handed over/flame going out. I think that it is fantastic that the profile of the Paralympics has been raised at London, and now I am really looking forward to it!

A quick look says there were 10,490 competitors in the Olympics and there will be 4,200 in the Paralympics. Add on the team officials, technical officials (eg referees) etc, and multiply by the extra time (19 days + 11 days of competition) and I think the complexities of running both together would just get too complicated.
