My dads care assistant just asked him if he had shot any people today.

I guess he was just trying to make conversation, but come on!

You dont come to the home of an elderly disabled man, who is living alone, and ask him:

"What have you been up to today?"

"Did you shoot any people?"

Shock

Does your dad have a gun? Was he in the forces?

SoleSource · 12/08/2012 20:01

Was this to do with your DF being in tbe forces?

danteV · 12/08/2012 20:01

I don't get it.
Has you dad shot anyone before? Sorry I am really confused.

frootshoots · 12/08/2012 20:01

Probably just trying to be funny/sarcastic - as if he's going to have shot any people. But YANBU, slightly tasteless, but I've heard worse.

Fireandashes · 12/08/2012 20:02

I hope he replied "yes, I shot the last care assistant who asked inappropriate questions".

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/08/2012 20:02

Was your dad upset?

GhostShip · 12/08/2012 20:03

How do you know they'd not had a conversation about it at an earlier date?

I used to look after a man who regularly said he was going getting his gun and shooting 'some japs' (he had dementia). Whilst we wouldn't encourage saying stuff like this, it was up to him and we'd ask him about it.

monsterchild · 12/08/2012 20:04

It sounds like it could be running joke with the carer and your dad. It's the sort of question a disabled person never gets asked, so perhaps it makes him laugh?
What did you Dad think of it?

QuintessentialShadows · 12/08/2012 20:10

My dad thinks he is bonkers.

He has a gun, not a "live" gun - it is sealed, he was a skiing - shooting champion in his youth, so has lots of medals and silver cups and trophies. Never shot any people, and never been in the forces.

My dad did not respond to his comments. After his stroke he takes a while to come up with witty retorts.

Sounds to me like he was just trying to be funny and make conversation tbh, maybe have a bit of banter.

monsterchild · 12/08/2012 20:23

If your Dad doesn't like the comments and tells you that, then ask him (dad) if he'd like you to say something to the carer?
I can't imagine a worse torture than having to endure stupid comments that I could not respond to accordingly!

MulberryMoon · 12/08/2012 20:27

Very odd comment. Sounds like conversational skills are not the carer's strong point.

iliketeamGB · 12/08/2012 20:35

WTF!?

What a weird thing to say. Even if you find it difficult to converse with clients, there is always something easy to chat about - the weather; the olympics; any visitors today etc.

iliketeamGB · 12/08/2012 20:36

The carer that is, not the previous poster.

QuintessentialShadows · 12/08/2012 20:38

I have a theory though. Could it be that his accent (chinese origins) was a bit strange, and he tried to say "Have you seen any people today"?

Giving the benefit of the doubt though.

Lots of other things to make small talk about, than asking an elderly man if he has shot somebody....

I know of a few Carers who build up a rapport with the people they care for. They try to converse with things the person is interested in. It sounds like this is what the carer has intended to do, but got it slightly very wrong.

Does this person care for your dad regularly? If so, a quiet word that it wasn't an appropriate phrase would be better than a formal complaint.

If it was bank staff then hopefully your dad won't have to deal with this person again anyway.

MulberryMoon · 13/08/2012 19:35

If he says anything like that again you could ask him what he said and why. Could be that he did say "Have you seen any people today"? which would obviously be fine.
