1 year old's Birthday party dilemma

It's my baby's first birthday soon. Aibu to plan a "proper" party for him? Ideally I would like a handful of close adult friends and his grandparents for a little tea party at home. However, a couple of the key close friends who we would love to invite have their own children. This makes numbers tricky because we can't really have more than 6 or 7 people without things being cramped and stressful (central London flat).

SO, wibu to hire a room somewhere (it's in October so prob too cold to have it in the park) so we could invite everyone and other children are then more than welcome? I know the baby won't have a clue but this feels important to me for some reason. Really important. I want to celebrate his first year with everyone!

DISCLAIMER - he's having a little joint party with all his baby friends too. Just the parents and babies (NCT friends so birthdays all v close together). This will be v low key - probably a picnic in the park and big shared cake...

no its not unreasonable at all we had a marquee in the garden it was more of garden party for all the people involved in ourlives, just to say thankyou for their support and help.
They certain appreciated it and loved celebrsting dcs first year

go all out spoil yourselves if you can afford to baby will only be 1 once, but i always insist make babys first cake yourself it doesnt matter if it looks like dogs dinner, you wont regret it when you look back knowing you made the effort

Thanks dubbada His cake will definitely be home made Smile Looking forward to planning that!

I think I'll just have to think of places to hire. Definitely not soft play, but somewhere that has some clear, safe floor space for the little ones to toddle/crawl around.

Your sons birthday so you can do it however you want.

I would personally find it a waste of money for a first birthday but if thats how you want to celebrate then do it!

dubbada · 11/08/2012 20:07

your right sirzy it is upto toomany dasies how they celebrate a first birthday,

I know i worked very hard to have my dc and make every effort to take advantage to celebrate with friends and family and they enjoy it - doesnt have to be done expensively

I think if you don't have a christening, a first birthday gains more significance.

I had the same problem, and I hired a party room as I couldn't fit many people in my flat. It cost about £100 and to be honest I was so tired after running around all day I was really glad I wasn't tidying the mess. It seemed worth it then!

Ah, well we have had a Christening but we didn't have a party. Just a v small lunch with Godparents.
