Even though they have two perfectly ok hands and just slap their hand on their thigh instead.

This really irritates me. Just clap normally FFS!

Who gives a shit if it's a first world problem???!!! Hmm

So is almost everything that is on these boards.

SamuelWestsMistress · 11/08/2012 18:17

Well said Chitchat. This was not intended to be a thread for the self righteous. They do seem to get about on mumsnet though...

A clap is a sign of "YEAAH!" if you can't be arsed to "YEAAH" then don't clap at all.

But can you clap with your norks? Mine are big enough. Think I will try when the DDs are in bed.

SamuelWestsMistress · 11/08/2012 18:20

Mine don't have controlled independent movement, but my god ibwish they did!

Thigh slapping is better than the very loud slightly slower than normal clap which makes people turn around surprise.

When I learnt sign language our tutor told us that hand waving is how deaf people show applause. It does look nice when the audience all wave madly, two handed or not.

Thistledew · 11/08/2012 19:00

It is strange, when you think about it, that it seems to be a world-wide trait that we signal our approval by slapping our hands together. I wonder how it evolved? At what stage of human development did it start? Do you think it was one individual who starting doing it, and when his/her friends asked him/her why s/he was making such a racket, explained that it was because he/she wanted to signal her approval for what was going on? Why did everyone think it was a good idea to copy? Or did it spontaneously occur in a whole group of people? Confused

LadyBeagleEyes · 11/08/2012 19:20

PMSL at this thread.
I mean there's degrees of claps.
Nice, polite clapping at certain events (eg the prize giving at school when it's not your kid)
Wild clapping and woop woop woop when it is your kid.
Polite clapping when some bastard has won a prize in the raffle.
Any decent gig, well you can clap and squeal any way you want.
A String Quartet at the village Hall (yes it happens here a lot, I've never attended) but in my imagination it's the most boring clapping ever.

garlicnuts · 11/08/2012 19:48

Thistle - definitely pre-human!

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2012 19:52

We are very keen that our babies clap asap aren't we? Confused

"At the Russian opera you tap your thumbnails together instead of clap."

Really? Confused

That is so weird I'm inclined to believe it.

tinkertitonk · 12/08/2012 11:00

But what is the sound of one hand clapping?

TheSmallClanger · 12/08/2012 11:05

Thigh slapping makes a better noise.

MrsKeithRichards · 12/08/2012 11:27

I've got ac dc stuck in my head now.

BertieBotts · 12/08/2012 11:33

I've often wondered why and how clapping evolved, too.

Do you remember at school when there was always one particular teacher who would insist that everyone only clapped with two fingers, so as to dull the cacophony of 200 excited infants all clapping overenthusiastically at once?

sashh · 12/08/2012 12:31

Even though they have two perfectly ok hands

Because you are a doctor and you have examined everyone on the planet's hands.

OP, I often do little half claps because I have arthritis in my hands and clapping really really hurts. An I suppose to just clap anyway and suffer the pain?

Dawndonna · 12/08/2012 14:19

I can only clap with one hand at the moment.

NoComet · 12/08/2012 14:20

I have a crap wrist, if it's playing up I clap with one hand.

somedayma · 12/08/2012 18:07

This is a great thread. At school we only clapped with 2 fingers against the other palm so as not to deafen the music teacher. Speaking of clapping, there's always one stubborn bugger in a crowd of clappers who has to get the last solitary clap. Sometimes you get 2 of them competing for the last clap

MrsKeithRichards · 12/08/2012 18:16

Grin at last clap!

Goofus · 12/08/2012 18:22

I hate it when people (no longer of school-age) do that 2 finger clapping thing. Urgh!
Thigh-clapping though- fine by me.

CMOTDibbler · 12/08/2012 18:36

I can only clap with one hand as my other hand is a) very painful b) imperfectly fixed to my arm and c) has the fingers pointing at 90' into my palm.

I'm already self concious of how I clap, so thanks

FalseStartered · 12/08/2012 18:39

i rather like using one to hand to clap the other IYGWIM

using both hands with equal clappage renders one rather similar to a performing seal Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/08/2012 18:40

How about foot stomping?
