To leave a pot of chilli out overnight?

I didn't think this through before I started.

I bunged a massive pot of chilli in the slow cooker at dinner time as I needed to use up the mince. It is done now. I will be heading to bed soon and it won't have cooled down for hours. WIBU to leave it out overnight to cool, or is that just a bit minging? I can't put it in the fridge yet as it is very hot.

It will be fine, leave in the coolest part of the kitchen, take lid off slow cooker and cover with a tea towel so that it cools quicker.
I leave stuff overnight all the time. If you are planning to freeze it I would put it in the tubs tonight and cover with a tea towel as it will cool quicker again

i am always doing this, and no one has yet died. Unless your kitchen is roastytoasty I wouldn't give it a second thought.

If you want to cool it down more quickly set it in the sink with some cold water for a bit, may need to change the water....then you might get it in the fridge.

We had chilli tonight and have same problem.
It will be fine but next time you heat it up make sure you cook it til it's really boiling hot. DH often puts it in the oven til it's nuclear hot then cools it enough to serve.

I always do this too. I wouldn't do it for more than a night or two when it's warm like this, though.

I'd pop it into a plastic box with a lid, then stick it into a sink of cold water, changing the water every few minutes. It will cool quickly then the box can be dried and popped in fridge.

It'll be fine, I've left food out overnight for years and have never given myself food poisoning.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 10/08/2012 22:28

Just make sure the lid is "fly tight" so to speak, or drape a tea towel over the top of the lid so there are no gaps. The food will be fine, but you don't want to find a fly or wee flitter moth in there or it will ruin the whole batch.

My grandmother had no fridge (this is going back a bit) and she'd be happy to keep a pot of stew/soup hanging around for several days, as long as she boiled it up for a few minutes each day.

If she got away with that, I'm sure you'll be find. Bung it in the fridge/freezer first thing, and make sure it bubbles away for a few minutes before you serve it up.
