I have a burnt chest Hmm. I kept getting comments from random people (midwife at aquanatal, shop assistant, MIL etc) I have seen today, and every single one was 'oh, have you been sunbathing too long again, not using suncream'.

ARGHHHHHHH! I had factor flippin' 50 on, covering both UVA and UVB rays, and a hat. I was sat under a tree having a picnic with DS for an hour.

And I burnt.

Why? I feel like I never want to leave the house again in sun. It is like this every year! I have never not burnt. I can't spend longer than 20 minutes with suncream on without burning it seems. Tried different kinds of suncream too. Expensive/cheap - it's all the same.

I am pale, and blonde. I don't want to tan. I just want to be able to go outside!

I've got a burnt chest. And Panda eyes Hmm. And I had cream on :(

TheDetective · 10/08/2012 00:26

Luckily(??!) it looks worse than it feels. It looks rather angry, but in fact, it only hurts to prod. I can function normally otherwise! Bit of aftersun is all that seems required!

I once got burnt on an overcast day, under an parasol, wearing factor 50 suncream.

YANBU. I'll sit in the shade with you and we'll sip mojitos whilst everyone else runs around getting red and sweaty. We will be pale and interesting.

WorraLiberty · 10/08/2012 00:34

So you know this

You have to apply it every 20 mins to stop it happening

I do have sympathy, I'm allergic to the sun so have to apply every 20 mins even if I'm out shopping.

Bingdweller · 10/08/2012 00:35

Poor you :-( Don't know if you have tried SunSense Sensitive factor 50+ but it is amazing. I have very fair skin, am being treated for melanoma so get this on prescription (you can buy though). Have just spent a fortnight in Spain and not a hint of red.

I feel for you, nothing worse than sore sunburn.

TheDetective · 10/08/2012 00:39

I was being facetious! I don't know how long it actually takes - it varies depending on the strength of the sun I would guess??!

Ooooh, off to google that SunSense...

YANBU I once got burnt in the tropics in the RAIN. Well drizzle but still...

You could cover it up with fake tan Lindsay Lohan stylee but perhaps parasol? I see them everywhere here (Asia) and am sorely tempted but scares of looking like a prat

squeakytoy · 10/08/2012 00:44

Aloe vera juice is very soothing on burnt skin.

TheDetective · 10/08/2012 00:44

I just don't want to risk skin cancer :(

Will get a tube of the sunsense stuff, thanks! £14.70 is nothing compared to burning year in year out!

I'm the same, I burned on a hot but cloudy day thei year - sun is just a no no for me.

angryfurball · 10/08/2012 02:49

It does wear off so you do have to reapply over and over, I'm the same. I spend the summer curled up in the shade clutching my factor 50.

lemmein · 10/08/2012 02:59

I was the same, burnt on overcast days - I used to dread summer. Ive used melanotan for the past 3 years and its amazing, never had a problem with the sun since! Its not yet licensed in this country though, so obviously may have unknown risks. People always think im mad for using such an extreme solution but unless you've experienced severe burning in mild heat wearing factor 50 then ya dont understand! I couldnt go outside, dreaded bbqs & days out - now i dont. In fact i tan a bit now (i still wear sunscreen, just spf20 though).

readyforno2 · 10/08/2012 03:12

I'm exactly the same, I just have to look at the sun through the window and I'm burnt.
I use p20 and it's amazing. We were in the caribbean a couple of years ago and I didn't burn once (ginger hair too!)

Bingdweller · 10/08/2012 08:17

thedetective If the small £15 tube does the trick, you can get a 500ml pump dispenser for about £40 if you plan on going abroad.

I used about 2/3 of a 500ml bottle for a fortnight. It's not the horrible thick and greasy suncream either, it's quite light on your skin. Good luck!

dottyspotty2 · 10/08/2012 08:22

Worra out of interest what sunscreen do you use DD2[16] has sun allergy and has so far failed to find sunscreen that doesn't react with her skin TIA.

80sMum · 10/08/2012 08:33

I find Piz Buin facor 30 day-long sunscreen pretty good. Despite what it claims, you will need to apply more than once a day though. Remember that you need to use loads of sunscreen not just a thin smear - and it rubs off easily so needs reapplying frequently.
Don't wear low-necked or sleeveless tops, so you avoid exposing areas that are not used to sun exposure.
Sit in the shade whenever it's an available option.

JumpingThroughHoops · 10/08/2012 08:35

Sun screen doesnt stop burning, thats a common myth. It delays it.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 10/08/2012 08:37

I struggle with both rosacea and polymorphous light eruption. Sad

so no sun for me, especially on my chest. Otherwise I get horrible spots which stay for about 10 days.
I used to be ok with PIz Buin allergy, but no more.
Hopefully, it could be hormone related, so once I am through the menopause, things might improve.
I don't even bother with fake tan either... So am pale and interesting with no wrinkles. And it is very liberating!

ENormaSnob · 10/08/2012 08:39

What's melanotan?

Is that the tanning injections?
