to let my DCs eat rare steak?

workshy · 09/08/2012 23:44

went out for tea, I had steak, they asked if they could try it -end of

until they told their dad, and now he is ranting that 'steak that is pissing blood onto the plate will make them ill and/or give them worms!'

really? really??

surely an 8&11 year old should be able to cope with a rare steak?

so AIBU for letting them try?

Is he always that bonkers?

They could eat it raw if they wanted. My 8 year old eats blue steak, raw oysters, carpaccio and sushi another one only eats pizza but never mind

If he really thinks it has worms why would he want you eating it?

WorraLiberty · 09/08/2012 23:46

YANBU

And someone should tell him that it's not blood, it's primarily water mixed with the protein Myoglobin.

squeakytoy · 09/08/2012 23:47

I dont think you can get worms from steak, or be ill from rare steak either! He is being daft.

susiedaisy · 09/08/2012 23:48

My kids are 11 and 14 and love a steak cooked rare and have never been ill from it!

workshy · 09/08/2012 23:48

yes he is that bonkers, and he is also the sort that won't touch even slightly pink meat

he is my ex so he doesn't care what I eat

did make me laugh once though when I made him ceviche as one of our last meals together -one of the nicest meals I ever made apparently lol

YANBU, my 11yo and 8yo order their steak medium rare. I have it medium well and DH has his rare so they have tried both ends and like it in the middle. Nothing wrong with it, your DH is being rather silly I think.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 09/08/2012 23:48

YANBU, my dd 6 has been eating medium rare since pretty much ever. sometimes she asks me not to cook it as she likes the blood Grin. I dont let her eat it raw however, but would maybe allow her to try steak tartare in a decent resteraunt though.

what does your dh think will happen to them? he is a bit bonkers

lubeybooby · 09/08/2012 23:50

Steak is perfectly safe and ridiculously delicious rare. YANBU! I first tried it age 12 and have loved it ever since.

Trioofprinces · 09/08/2012 23:50

Penis - sounds like my 11yo who has also eaten raw oyster (only 1 mind, he hated it!!), carpaccio and sushi plus octopus and various other 'delicacies'. I like the fact he will eat almost anything.

WorraLiberty · 09/08/2012 23:52

I don't like rare steak myself because I find it too 'mushy'

But I do love a medium steak that's pink in the middle and so do my DH and kids

SpamMarie · 10/08/2012 14:36

It isn't any more likely to make your children ill than it is to make you ill. As long as it is cooked on the outside in a hygienic place, it'll be FINE.

I'm half French, I was pratically weaned on rare steak.

WitchOfEndor · 10/08/2012 14:41

I think as long as it is a good quality piece of meat from a reputable supplier then you are fine to feed medium rare meat to your DCs. I did hear from the Head of Parasitology at Glasgow Uni (in the 80s) that it was easy to get worms from undercooked meat and he would never eat meat which was pink, but I'm hoping the quality of meat has improved drastically since then!

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 10/08/2012 14:42

He's mad I tell ya, mad. They'll be fine.

NovackNGood · 10/08/2012 14:43

Kids love steak tartare.

Steak is not pork.

stealthsquiggle · 10/08/2012 14:52

YANBU. Ex is being stupid. My DC are 9 and 5 and eat rare steak, very occasionally steak tartare (including the raw egg - although they are our own uber-fresh eggs), oysters and sushi when we can find an affordable all you can eat deal. DH and I sometimes wish we hadn't been quite so quick to encourage them to try things as we can't have these things without them demanding them too, which gets v. expensive.

Fortunately they eat plenty of junk cheaper foods as well.

MadameCupcake · 10/08/2012 16:30

YANBU, DH eats rare steak and my 6 year old eats it too (I have it medium). Never really thought it was an issue.

helloclitty · 10/08/2012 16:37

Does he let them eat smoked Salmon?

TheCountessOlenska · 10/08/2012 16:37

When we were on holidays in France with 1 year old DD, I gave her french bread dipped in the run-off from my rare steak to suck on - I thought blood was probably quite nutritious!

I can't remember the science of this, but a chef once told me the red juice that runs out of rare steak isn't actually blood (??)

PenisVanLesbian · 10/08/2012 16:49

You can eat pork pink nowadays.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/08/2012 16:55

DD (under 2) eats her steak and lamb rare (because she eats off my plate half the time). Since the outside is exposed and that is seared, the inside can be pretty raw and of no concern. Not the same for rare hamburger or steak tartare but rare steak is fine.

StanleyAccrington · 10/08/2012 17:02

the dds have had rare meat, raw egg (in a Nigella tart thing), and sashimi since they were weaned. this is mostly because i am quite absent-minded, rather than due to any informed risk assessment

danteV · 10/08/2012 17:06

Dh owns a steak house and is very into to h&s, as its his restaurant. Its absolutely fine. Dd has been eating steak medium rare since she was about 4.
She even loves 'the red sauce it comes with'.
Its not blood, won't make them ill (unless the meat is off, in which case it doesn't matter how it is cooked) or give them worms.
He sounds like a child that thinks the world should do everything the way he wants and, like a child, can not come up with a reasonable reason to support it. So he just makes shit up.

TheBirderer · 10/08/2012 17:52

"pissing blood"

Hah! Send him this: www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/04/the-red-juice-in-raw-red-meat-is-not-blood/

TheCountessOlenska · 10/08/2012 18:00

Ah ha! Thought it was something like that - thanks Birderer!

SneakyBiscuitEater · 10/08/2012 18:11

Ooh can I join in on the stealth boasts with a all my three DCs have enjoyed rare steak and rare roast beef since 7 months old as part of baby lead weaning. It is yummy and iron rich, what's not to like? My 2yo DD1 complains if her pink meat is too brown and DS likes to pretend to be a tiger. You OH is clearly bonkers OP.
