To want to move to the south coast?

mummymacbeth · 09/08/2012 22:53

I live in Scotland, I have some friends who have recently moved to the south coast (Brighton and Eastbourne). They are loving it. Am I mad to think I could have a better life by moving to the south coast (better weather, proximity to the continent)? It seems so achievable. Is there a downside? Anyone done it?

Dorset is lovely :-)

thepeoplesprincess · 11/08/2012 19:49

YABU.

Move to Margate if you want sun and sand. Brighton beach is all stones.

It's also horribly, devastatingly, ball breakingly expensive round here.

DumSpiroSpero · 11/08/2012 20:48

It's sounds like it's something that out would be worth your while considering and it's an added bonus that you've already got friends in the area.

I was born in London, now live about 20 minutes along the coast from Brighton and am currently on hols on the west coast of Scotland. It is absolutely beautiful but 3 days in and the remoteness is already driving me nuts - we are off to Edinburgh for the day tomorrow - I need buildings and traffic and a bit of dirt! Grin

I missed the cultural aspects of living here when I lived elsewhere; London, the Brighton festivals, all the arty-crafty stuff that goes on everywhere down here in every village and town.
I barely used my NT and EH memberships when I lived in the NW.
I had cable TV there, but didn't bother with cable or sky when I came back down South because there were so many other choices.

thing1andthing2 · 11/08/2012 21:08

I live in Brighton and I have a fig tree in my garden with actual figs on it.
Just saying..

FallenCaryatid · 11/08/2012 21:11

Not to mention the vineyards.
I've lived in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Lancashire, London, Devon...several other counties and Sussex.
Going to stay here thank you. Although I like visiting other places for a month or so, there's nowhere else I'd rather live.

we moved from the south coast to relatively remote Scotland....absolutely hate it and desparate to move back down south now. I too miss the sandy beaches nearby, we are coastal but it's all rocky (and wet and windy) so not the same. Haven't been to cinema, never mind a show/gig since we moved, there's so much more choice for that down south. Doing job ap after job ap. Not getting interviews though, worried they see how far away we live now and just reject because of travel for interview/relocation hassle. There's a lot more competition for jobs down south too so be prepared for it to take a while even if you decide to go for it! and good luck if you do!

FriedSprout · 11/08/2012 21:53

I live in the south, too much traffic, too crowded and too much housing development. Want to swap? Grin

FallenCaryatid · 11/08/2012 22:04

Have you ever lived up North sprout my lovely?

Do it! Our move from Scotland to Sussex was one of the best things we ever did. I loved our time there and would definitely live in Eastbourne if I could. It really is God's Own County. Sadly we couldn't afford a house and have now been in the Midlands for 10 yrs, but no complaints really as we love it here too. Going to Sussex for a few days at the end of the month and I can't wait Grin.

CommunistMoon · 11/08/2012 22:07

thing1andthing2 we have a good crop of figs here in Staffordshire too! My SIL in West Sussex grows grapes, though Envy

Marne · 11/08/2012 22:09

Im in the sw and weather has been horrid this year, last time i was on the beach it was raining and windy, it is nice down here though so i can see why you would rather be down south.

twooter · 11/08/2012 22:18

Tempted too, but stuck up here cos of dh's job. Although whenever I go to England, I spend the first week wincing at all the people, the second just appreciating the warmth. Still, at least we have cheaper holidays if you go in English school term. And please, please, may there be no independence.

FriedSprout · 12/08/2012 00:44

It's that obvious Fallen? Blush - I'll just squish up a down here Grin

Pandemoniaa · 12/08/2012 01:12

I recommend Hastings. Lots going on, very quirky and nowhere near as expensive as Brighton or bits of West Sussex.

I find Eastbourne deeply depressing. Nowadays the town is a bizarre combination of very elderly people on Shearing's Coach Holidays and the cast of Shameless.

Tortington · 12/08/2012 01:29

i moved from north west to west sussex - i cannot recommend it highly enough.

today i have sunburn Grin i live literally 5 mins from beach and can hear the waves from my back garden.

there is something going on somewhere every single weekend. whilst getting my sun tan today and reading a trashy book, i admired the old airplanes, bi planes and spitfires flying overhead to an airshow.

and i still sneer at softy southerners Wink

EdgarOlymPic · 12/08/2012 10:09

just been to folkestone (well, Dungeness to stay - right by the powe station - it's great1) - it was great! fantastic playground on the seafront.

Romney sands lovely, Rye quaint...

Hastings and that area has some really nice parts and cheaper by far than Brighton/ Lewes area...

Worthing area has some cheaper bits and miles of shingle beach also... most hours of sunshine per year (this is disputed by Eastbourne)

it has rained alot this year. when i lived in the NW - it did that every year...

lazarusb · 12/08/2012 11:00

I live in East Sussex and most of the rain in the last 4/5 weeks has been considerate enough to fall at night Grin The days have been warm and mainly sunny. We are within walking distance of a mostly pebbly beach, a park and a Country park. The roads out of town aren't great but could be worse. I travel to Uni in Kent and the countryside around us is beautiful.

Having said that, I adore Scotland. If you fancy a house swap next year, let me know! Grin
