Not sure of spellings but surely they should have more Of a presence at the Olympics?

I've seen one of them once with Usain bolt...

Remember that awesome mascot in Germany (I think it was the world championships?) Dancing and celebrating with the winners (quickly, not 10 mins later) and dancing to entertain crowds between events?

Maybe it's just not been shown on TV but I enjoy watching daft mascot antics! I have two seeming hiding out back seems pretty lame given the amount of shit merch they sold pre-games.

AIBU?

Mandeville is the birth place of the parolympics I think.

And I can't remember what the significance of the wenlock is.

mummy2midget · 09/08/2012 21:18

Never mind those two what about the gorgeous lion I want to see him but it seems he only exists in cuddly toy form! Confused

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 09/08/2012 21:21

It could be worse......we could have a mascot called Macca.

Annoying and always dancing inanely at inappropriate times.
Oh I see we do. Smile

EdgarOlymPic · 09/08/2012 21:21

i met wenlock on the torch relay! i love them. we have lots due to BIL working for ODA.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 09/08/2012 21:21

The lion is the Team GB symbol, the cuddly one is just the kids' version of the lion's head on the kits.

Wenlock and Manderville are drops of steel from the last girder to be made for the Olympic Stadium. Brought to life by a rainbow. I've been reading the blasted story every night to my 4 year old ever since we went to the Olympic Park last week.

LeeCoakley · 09/08/2012 21:24

Just googled. Wenlock is the Shropshire Wenlock. Apparently Pierre whatsisface based the modern olympics around what he saw there. I think the mascots should have better visibility - I haven't really been aware of them until the last day or two.

Much Wenlock is the birthplace of Dr William Penny Brookes who founded the Wenlock Olympian Society in 1850 "to promote the moral, physical and intellectual improvement of the inhabitants of the Town and neighbourhood of Wenlock".

"Dr Brookes did organise a national Olympic Games in London, at Crystal Palace, in 1866 and this was the first Olympics to resemble an Olympic Games to be held outside of Greece. But while others had created Olympic contests within their countries, and broached the idea of international competition, it was Coubertin whose work would lead to the establishment of the International Olympic Committee and the organisation of the first modern Olympic Games."

"On his return to France, Coubertin gave a glowing account of his stay in an article, "Les Jeux Olympiques à Much Wenlock", and referred to his host's efforts to revive the Olympics. He wrote : "If the Olympic Games that Modern Greece has not yet been able to revive still survives there today, it is due, not to a Greek, but to Dr W P Brookes". Although Coubertin later sought to downplay Brookes's influence, he corresponded with him for several years and sent him a golden medal (made of silver) in 1891 to be presented to the winner of the Tilting Competition.

Brookes died just four months before the 1896 Summer Olympics held in Athens in 1896, organised by Coubertin's International Olympic Committee."

There are lots of Wenlocks at the Olympic venues. We saw a sand sculpture one at the Beach Volleyball and DP has just facebooked a pick of a massive flag of him at the football tonight.

noblegiraffe · 09/08/2012 21:49

Is wenlock the one that looks like a penis?

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 09/08/2012 21:59

They both look like sex toys.

Its in keeping with the London 2012 sex theme as exemplified by Lisa Simpson giving a Blow Job.

The British are far from prudish... we are trying to prove this to the rest of the world.

Corcrikeyermintrude · 09/08/2012 22:05

Quite a lot of them are in my stomach - the small chocolate ones are surprisingly tasty (and in the vending machine at work).

DialsMavis · 09/08/2012 22:10

They are part of the Zionist conspiracy apparently, I read it on fb. The same person explained about the gov weather machine that gave us all the crap weather this summer then improved it for the Olympics.... Wink Grin

Psammead · 10/08/2012 07:13

Roaring at MrsRobertDuvall's comment Grin

I am glad I am having a girl. If it was a boy, I would be sorely tempted by the name Wenlock. It really appeals to me for some reason. I wonder if there will be a few little Wenlocks running around next year?
