....Who (as far as I know) have completely cornered the market on selling anything, ever.

I usually only use my account for buying loads but had a clear out of my wardrobe last month and sold some of my old tat clothes, made about £40 profit after paypal fees.

Have received my ebay invoice for July and its over £30 !

I am completely fuming as they have got me over a barrel and I have no choice but to pay the fucker

Gumtree. Admittedly I only use it for bigger stuff, not clothes, but it's free, and whoever picks up whatever you're selling will give you cash. Win win. I owuld never use ebay to sell again after hearing some real horror stories

cozietoesie · 09/08/2012 17:20

ebay own gumtree.

JumpingThroughHoops · 09/08/2012 17:20

But you know the terms and conditions when you sign up. You know there is a often a listing fee, you know there is final value fee, and you know paypal takes a cut.

If you are going to stick a load of 99p stuff on, then you won't make any profit to speak of. High value stuff, you will.

If their terms and conditions are clear, which they are, then there is nothing to be fuming about. When deciding whether it's worth selling something on ebay, you factor listing fees, final value fees and PayPal fees into it.

YANBU

Even selling High value items, they still take too much and I hate the way its broken up into different kinds of fee's. FGS If your going to charge me an extortionate amount at least charge me all at once out of the money I've just made, don't come back later when I think I've got a few quid then take it from me. Rant over

I now only buy things from ebay.

ZeldaUpNorth · 09/08/2012 17:33

Listed my double buggy on there. Got £117 for it and that was less than i was hoping. -£12.91 ebay fees (and thats with free listing) and -£4.18 paypal So really got £99 for it. Should of really put it on free-ads...

UserNameNotAvailable · 09/08/2012 17:35

Ebay also owns paypal. I didn't know they owned Gumtree though.

JumpingThroughHoops · 09/08/2012 17:36

I agree with you to a certain extent.

There used to be a lucrative living made from eBay, selling your own stuff.

Sadly the site is largely overrun by traders from the FE and UK based importers which is a big dent in the sellers market

I still think it's a good medium for selling the unusual or the antiquities though.

I would still compare with on line high street stores before buying anything - been around the eBay block far too many times.

fruitysummer · 09/08/2012 17:37

Preloved

Pay a yearly fee of £5, no other charges.

And you don't even have to pay that if you only want to buy.

I think facebook now have a 'market' not sure if it's any good or how it works though.

JumpingThroughHoops · 09/08/2012 17:39

Just to add to the list - eBay also ownes Skype

Here's a whole list of eBay acquisition:

dozensofpichu · 09/08/2012 17:39

Are you sure that there hasn't been a mistake on your invoice? Just I've had a big clear out of baby things totalling £260, my invoice was for £26. Even after paypal fees I still made a nice sum. Final value fees are 10% of sale price so a £30 invoice would mean £300 in sales surely?

WoodlandHills · 09/08/2012 18:55

God they are taking over everything, had no idea they owned gumtree and skpye Confused

YABU if you didnt take any notice of the fees when you were doing your listings.

ChitchatAtHome · 09/08/2012 18:59

Have you tried Ebid?

ken0eddie0kennedy · 09/08/2012 19:07

I agree that those fees sound steep. I've just sold £450 worth of stuff in the last month (hadn't sold anything for ages so had lots) and so far eBay invoice is £50 ish. The PayPal fees are taken at the time, I always leave enough in my PayPal account to cover the eBay fee part and bank the rest.

GhostShip · 09/08/2012 20:07

Something wrong there, it's only 10%. And PayPal fees wouldn't the equate to the remainder? I don't think?

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/08/2012 20:14

Agree, fees look too steep - just done two lots of selling and both times the ebay fees were around 10% ish.

bitofcheese · 09/08/2012 20:17

i agree. i have a business account, then take 10% on that. i really wanted ie e-bid to take off as ebay REALLY need some competition so they stop taking the piss. they constantly make changes that don't need being made (just to justify having a job) & make things bloody complicated. still love ebay though even though the fees are really high & i don't charge for packaging anymore as too many buyers moan as think you are overcharging them (as they don't take into account the cost of ie box/bubble wrap etc)
