YABU

Give em an inch and they'll take a mile, crust refusal is just the start of it.

LittleHarrysMum · 09/08/2012 13:20

Nope YANU sometimes I don't eat my crusts. So there. Smile

WorraLiberty · 09/08/2012 13:20

Nope

Olympia2012 · 09/08/2012 13:20

How old is the child? And why are they not eating it all..... If they are lazy and holding out for extras afterwards then yes, they need to eat it all first!

Dappylittlemomma · 09/08/2012 13:21

YANBU, life is too short. Also we all know the crusts will put hairs on your chest- not always a good look on a toddler.Smile

ChitchatAtHome · 09/08/2012 13:21

YABU - sometimes.

Most bread has soft crusts, and it's not exactly a hardship to eat the crusts on a sandwich. Leaving the crusts off just just leads to fussiness IMO. Besides, cutting off the crust reduces the sandwich down by about 1/5, quite a lot of waste! I feel really uncomfortable teaching children that it's ok to waste food like that. (Having grown up in a family that were very poor early on).

If it's a hard crusted bread, then yes, there is a reason to leave them.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 09/08/2012 13:21

YANBU pick your battles and all that.

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/08/2012 13:22

I've never eaten the crusts, the dog gets them.
Ds 17 always has.

SoleSource · 09/08/2012 13:22

Just wondering. No age of child.

But if my kids eat the crust then i will have nothing to put out for the birds.

Crusts are cheaper than buying bags of bird food.

Pseudo341 · 09/08/2012 13:23

YANBU. It's no big deal and IMO making a big fuss over a child not eating some things carries a risk of giving them bad associations with mealtimes and food and will potentially cause them to refuse other foods aswell. I also leave the crusts on bread quite often, whereas DD eats hers so apparently my "bad" example hasn't affected her.

ClaireRacing · 09/08/2012 13:24

You have to pick your battles.

If you know your toddler is not going to eat crusts, don't serve them

The worst scenario is to have a battle where you will probably lose.

Or you could prepare the sandwiches together and let the child make the decision, meanwhile model crust-loving.

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/08/2012 13:25

Actually the crusts give you curly hair.
Ds has, I don't so it could be true.
Except the crust eating dog is very smooth coated.

Astr0naut · 09/08/2012 13:25

My sister never ate her crusts - she claimed her hair was curly enough!

Ds won;t eat the crusts; he's 2. Dd will; she's 9 months.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 09/08/2012 13:26

my dd rarely eats bread, she much preferes pitta or wraps etc, so in any situation where a sandwhich is bread based ie eating out or at friends house I let her leave the crusts.

not eating bread is a good habit for a child to get into imho, there are much healthier alternatives.

SoleSource · 09/08/2012 13:28

Pita is healthier because less fat or less carb?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 09/08/2012 13:28

TBH, I think it is important as our food is getting softer all the time - soon children will be unable to chew :o

Mine whinge about perfectly ordinary food being too hard and it bugs me. DSs orthodontist also puts the trend towards soft foods up as one of the causes of crooked teeth as we're not using our jaws correctly.

Olympia2012 · 09/08/2012 13:30

Well this child may not be a toddler... Could be an 8 year old,10,14

HecateHarshPants · 09/08/2012 13:33

I don't think it's the end of the world, no. But wasting food isn't on, so if bread with crusts isn't what the child likes, then I'd just stop giving it to them.

Or cut off the crusts and make croutons.

SoleSource · 09/08/2012 13:34

Try something other than soup, soup Grin.

Why is bread so unhealthy?

(Apart from the fact it has salt in it)

wasabipeanut · 09/08/2012 13:46

YANBU. I have 3 children under 5, I pick my battles. Sometimes they eat them sometimes they don't. DD used to eat them happily until DS1 taught her otherwise

They go to the birds.

Actuallylookingok · 09/08/2012 13:51

nope, no problem at all.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 09/08/2012 13:51

YANBU. I don't eat crusts, never have. I'm not a fussy eater and it has never had a detrimental effect on my health.

I cannot understand why people make such a big deal out of crusts. Especially when so many sandwiches don't have filling at the crusts. If I'd wanted to eat two bits of dry bread together, I wouldn't have bothered making a sandwich in the first place.

theodorakis · 09/08/2012 13:52

Crusts? Bread? You wicked person, my children don't eat any food at all just in case they may accidently inbibe a grain of sugar and salt... I just feed them IV nutrients.
