DH has just called to say we are going camping. Tonight. We are going camping TO NIGHT. We have never been camping before but he has been to Go Outdoors and bought a stupidly large tent, sleeping mats and bags and other 'stuff' as he says. He's even booked a pitch somewhere.

What the bloody hell to I take? Have to DCs 8 and 6. I love his that he's so unpredictably but sometimes he can be just plain daft. HELP!

Using a gas cooker in a tent is fine providing you follow the instructions on the cooker and the instructions on the tent. Our 10 man tent is suitable for cooking in whereas the 4 man tent is not suitable. It's all about space and ventilation.

The things we often forget which are fairly crucial are:

Torches and some sort of light for inside the tent
Chairs and a table - it's horrible lying down all weekend
Mallet
Bucket or washing up bowl to carry the plates a mile to the washing up facilities
Something to contain drinking/handwashing water - like a 5 litre water bottle or similar
Big shopping bag - to take all the new and towels and toiletries to the showers

Have fun!

Make sure you put tent up before you go so you know nothing is missing. When we were at Go Outdoors some of the larger tents came in 3 bags.
Don't be put off by the Fitt Family who put their tent up on the trot in 20 minutes! If they want to feel superior let them.
Camping is actually great fun, and usually the other campers are very friendly and helpful.

We've been campers since I was a kid. We've had our tent for years so have bags of experience putting it up. We still have to get the instruction book out and make complete tits of ourselves. People always think we're newbies and come help. :o
