To feed my toddler eggs?

This might sound a bit odd, but work with me, I'm fragile and paranoid at the moment!

It has long been a struggle to get my 2 year old DS to eat breakfast, which I think is important if you are a busy little person playing with mummy/going to playgroup/entertaining yourself whilst mummy watches daytime TV. It's a long time till lunch.

Anyway, we had brief success with peanut butter on toast but that is now being rejected too. About a month ago I tried him on some scrambled egg, and fuck me, he loved it.

So, every morning for brekkie he has two eggs, scrambled with milk. Sometimes he has a few tablespoons of low salt/sugar baked beans, but not everyday. He will not eat toast if I serve it on toast so I've stopped wasting the bread.

It was suggested to me yesterday that this is weird/nutritionally subnormal/bad for him. I can't for the life of me think why, but I wonder if I'm missing something? Am I damaging my child, amd I mentally warping him? Willhe grow up to be a cereal killer (sorry, couldn't resist). But seriously, him eating and enjoying eggs for breakfast is worse than him ignoring/tipping/wasting a bowl of cereal or some toast and going hungry because... why now?

Incidentally he eats a good amount of lunch and dinner, which are invariably healthy and home made, so his overall diet is pretty sound.

Thank you! I refuse to ask a dietician anything, last one I spoke to when DD was 4 months (SCBU baby) told me to wean her on Quavers because 'they melt in the mouth'. I ignored her!

Tee hee!! New guidance is an eye-opener Grin

I had no idea. I have however always poo-pood my dm's opinion. She doesn't believe in having more than one egg!!!

Love the new guidance

DS2 loves scrambled egg and probably has it 4 times a week aswell as a boiled or poached egg featuring in another meal a couple of times.

He also doesn't have it with toast just a big old plate of egg! He has had feeding problems so to me it's brilliant and not something to change. We also see a dietician in our feeding clinic and she's never raised it as a concern.......

Carry on and ignore any more 'advice'!

Eggs are very good for you; contain important minerals & a good source of protein; plus very delicious.

Happier hens seem to lay the best eggs:

The tastiest eggs are organic free range if you can afford them.

Or just plain free range (a bit cheaper).

Eggs from hens that live happily as pets in back gardens taste good too; the owners often sell the eggs cheap or even give them away.

Just ask around work & friends to see if anyone keeps chickens or has neighbours who keep them.

I've started to try to eat 2 eggs a day; they are filling so i find that they help with weight loss (as well as being a healthy & natural food).
I like them hard boiled & mashed with some black pepper & a tsp of Coleman's English Mustard.

As a toddler i remember eating lots of scrambled egg; fried egg; omelettes; boiled egg & soldiers; even runny 'egg in a cup'; yum!

My cholesterol levels were checked & are fine.

Ps some cats love scrambled egg too..

theodorakis · 09/08/2012 13:14

eek to the kit kats, I had a packet of walkers cheese and onion for my breakfast!

Aboutlastnight · 09/08/2012 13:15

All three of mine eat a boiled egg for brekkie almost every morning, and it 's reassuring to know they have had a good tide of protein, vitamins and minerals in the morning before school

WelshMaenad · 09/08/2012 13:19

Yep, we get all our eggs from a local chappy who keeps a troupe of cheery and decidedly mischievous hens and ducks. I like that we're helping him earn a bit of pin money. He's an old bachelor who likes cake but can't bake for toffee so he sometimes swaps a dozen eggs for a home made lemon drizzle loaf!

On early shifts at work i often have chocolate & coca cola for breakfast.

My colleagues think my eating habits are a bit shocking & can't understand how i'm losing weight... but it's only 1 Early shift a week... i eat healthy food the rest of the time :)

SoldeInvierno · 09/08/2012 13:23

sounds healthy to me. At least he's having protein, rather than the emptly calories provided by most cereals

freerangelady · 09/08/2012 13:24

According to my mum I spent the first 3 yrs of my life eating nothing but scrambled egg. Fast forward 30 yrs and I'm married to an egg farmer!! Newest advice is that cholesterol in eggs is lower than originally thought so it's ok to eat as many as you want (within reason) 10 a day is no good for anyone but my bank balance!! Eggs also have 30% less calories than 30 yrs ago too due to improvements in fees

Tee2072 · 09/08/2012 13:30

Gosh, I used to feed my toddler eggs for lunch several times a week. He seems fine!

He likes toast and fruit for breakfast. Just for the record. Grin

missymoomoomee · 09/08/2012 14:33

One of my helpful nosy interfeiring cowbag neighbours came around at tea time twice in the last week and both days my kids had egg, she went into meltdown telling me how my childen would end up 'egg-bound' if they had more than 2 a week then went into details about how it happened to her son and what she did about it (far tmi). Just ignore whoever it was, your house, your child, your rules.

squeakytoy · 09/08/2012 14:36

Even the dog got boiled egg and toast for breakfast everyday in my mums house. He lived to be 18 too. Grin

Scrambled eggs are lovely with chopped hot dog sausages in them too on a sandwich. :)

CaliforniaLeaving · 09/08/2012 16:08

Eggs and toast is one of my Dd's favorite breakfasts. If I ask her to pick dinner she says scrambled eggs and toast Grin so we occasionally do breakfast for dinner.

Hairtodayandgonetomorrow · 09/08/2012 16:18

missy, I just googled egg bound and it said that its when a chicken can't lay it's egg, which can lead to infection. Your neighhbour's son lays eggs and one got stuck?! I think she's a bit mad!

missymoomoomee · 09/08/2012 16:27

Haha she really is actually, her description of it was traumatic enough that I have never googled it, she told me it was egg induced constipation followed by a very graphic description of how to cure it. Next time she nags me about this I'm going to ask her why it was so traumatic that he son couldn't lay an egg. Thanks Hair I do love the times when I can get one over on her.

WelshMaenad · 09/08/2012 17:32

He is definitely not constipated! I would know, I change the nappies...

drtachyon · 09/08/2012 17:32

I would have thought scrambled eggs for breakfast everyday was healthier and more nutricious than a bowl of cereal or a couple of slices of toast, personally.

FamiliesShareGerms · 09/08/2012 17:36

DD loves scrambled eggs and would eat them every day if I had time to make them. They are the failsafe, guaranteed to be eaten meal. OP, YANBU at all

phlebas · 09/08/2012 17:59

3 of my kids (the 4th hates eggs & will only have them in pancakes) have eggs everyday, we have our own hens so the morning routine is collect them then cook them. My 13 month old has two for breakfast every single day. I was brought up on scrambled eggs from my parents' hens too. A quite surprised that someone thought there was something odd about giving a child eggs they are great food for children! Only child who has ever been constipated is the egg hater Wink dd2 recently had her vitamin D levels tested & they were really good - I thank the eggs and walking around naked most of the time.

(full of protein, essential amino aids, pretty much all the vitamins except C (especially the Bs/folate, A, D, E) iron, zinc, calcium, antioxidants - fabulous stuff!)

ErikNorseman · 09/08/2012 18:41

I would reduce it to one egg with a bit of added cheese or butter and a spoon of regular baked beans (reduced sugar has sweeteners) with it. No reason why he needs to have bread every morning!

confusedpixie · 09/08/2012 18:58

The only thing I'd find odd is it being 2 eggs because I have two eggs when scrambling, but then I have lots of beans and toast too Grin Eggs are really good for you though so don't worry too much. Is it possible that you could give him a tiny bit of bread/toast or something alongside, maybe a piece from a slice of toast for you? Just so that if he gets curious he can try, and if not it's not wasting a slice.

My 20mo charge loves scrambled egg, no clue why. She'll demand that pesto is stirred into it too Hmm

PenelopePipPop · 09/08/2012 19:06

ErikNorseman both Heinz and Sainsbury's own brand reduced sugar and salt baked beans are simply that - and I can't tell the difference at all. They definitely don't contain any artificial sweeteners. The same may be true for other supermarket brands too - I haven't checked.

As for the OP - of course it isn't unreasonable to give a toddler scrambled eggs for breakfast. It is unreasonable to listen to weirdy people with mad opinions about things they have no need to opine on or even worry their tiny fragile little minds about.
