to ask what to do with my bottles and no microwave?

My dh, the heavy handed fuck that he is, opened the microwave last night. It was a totat crash bang wallop moment and next thing he's standing with a microwave door in his hand.

So we'll replace it, all we really use it for is sterilising bottles.

So do I just boil them in a pan? For how long?

get a milton cold water steriliser and shove a tablet in a big tupper ware box with a lid does the same job. back in the dark ages Grin that is how we did it none of these new fangled things Wink with dd2 i had a steam steriliser i used to stare at it as if it was the best invention ever

PenisVanLesbian · 09/08/2012 12:12

Dishwasher is all you need. Sterilising is old hat

SuiGeneris · 09/08/2012 12:16

US dishwashers wash at a higher temperature than UK ones so you are better off boiling for 5 minutes or using Milton...

PenisVanLesbian · 09/08/2012 12:23

The dishwasher advice is also true in the UK. 70c is certainly adequate.

Mrsjay · 09/08/2012 12:24

I used to have a 70c setting on my dishwasher my new 1 is 60 not that i use it for sterilising

I'm a bit eek at the thought of making bottles up with tap water!

Gave them a good wash, usually do anyway, and boiled in my big soup pot for 15 minutes with the lid on.

So uneconomic though isn't it? Lost count of the amount of times I've boiled my kettle today!

Thanks for the advice. Sure my dishwasher has a 75 setting. Bit worried about the teats getting lost though!

Dishwasher is absolutely fine.

valiumredhead · 09/08/2012 16:52

Teats go on top drawer of dishwasher.

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/08/2012 16:54

stangirl Please please use hot water to make up formula - the powder is not sterile and needs minimum 70degs to make it totally safe.

Serve as cold as you like but use hot water to make it up.

Stangirl · 09/08/2012 17:47

Gnocchi I was advised not to use hot water because it destroyed the vitamins in the formula - but the water had to be sterile ie pre-boiled.

Oh well. Done with it now. Did both babies for 6months each on it with no ill effects. The bottles I used were so poor quality boiling water probably would have melted them.

jollyrancher · 09/08/2012 17:49

Hot water is to kill the bugs in the formula, not the bugs in the water.

Stangirl · 09/08/2012 18:01

well you learn something every day.

Stangirl · 09/08/2012 18:03

Actually. I just Googled "how to make up formula" and the first hit was this;

Boil tap water and leave it to cool for no longer than half an hour.

Pour the required amount of water into the bottle.

Add the right number of scoops to the bottle with the scoop provided, using a clean knife to level it off.

Put on the teat and cover and give the bottle a good shake until all the powder has dissolved.

Test the temperature by tipping a little milk out of the teat onto the inside of your wrist. It should feel just warm, not hot."

Which differs from the boiling water into formula advice here.

I can google how to get rich in 3 days and get lots of answers, doesn't mean any of them are worth a shite!
Don't ask Dr Google, read the latest NHS guidelines.

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/08/2012 18:08

Stan, where has anyone on here said the water has to be boiling? We said hot. 1 litre of boiled water cools at a degree a minute, so 1 litre can be boiled and left for 30 mins to bring it to 70degs which is what people on here and the tin say.

FriskyBivalves · 09/08/2012 18:12

Here in France the advice is to make up formula with room temp Evian. So I do. So far, so good. Ds is ten months and has been on formula about three weeks now. Wonder what they do to their formula to make it bug-proof?
