Sorry for Daily Mail Link
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2185041/Fathers-banned-play-centres-women-decree.html

AIBU to think this playbarn is unfair, especially for children whose parent is a single father? Or is it about time that there were more women only spaces?

I've posted in feminism too. I'm undecided. Would love to hear everyone's views.

Have age-limited sessions.
Have mums' sessions or dads' session.
Have a ladies lounge if you have space - for mums who don't want to mix with strange men for religious or cultural reasons, or for mums who want to be able to breastfeed in a slightly more private area.
Provide a range of options that suit your community and customers and the play centre will flourish.
Don't exclude whole groups of people on a permanent basis because you are too lazy to come up with creative solutions.

She has banned joint bank accounts for all staff, everyone must have an account in their own name and men are not allowed access to their account, even with written consent which is brilliant but a complete pain in the arse for us!

confusedgypsychick · 08/08/2012 09:58

theodorakis, I just moved to Abu Dhabi from Qatar a year and a half ago, and it's even more on the way out here than it is there! They don't even have family days here.

Nancy66 · 08/08/2012 09:58

jumping - if the play centre are saying they have introduced the scheme because of the predominantly muslim clientele then giving the stats is perfectly reasonable.

WorraLiberty · 08/08/2012 10:01

Ridiculous idea

gorionine · 08/08/2012 10:16

I am a Muslim and I find the very idea of a play centre where Dh and my sons would be banned from entering very disturbing.

Olympia2012 · 08/08/2012 10:59

My neighbours (Muslim) would be stuffed then! The dad is very hands on and the 2 teenage sons are very involved big brothers.

QuenelleOJersey2012 · 08/08/2012 11:01

Damn! That's twice in two days I've clicked on a DM link. I've vowed to stop doing it but can't seem to help myself Angry

TroublesomeEx · 08/08/2012 11:07

As others have already said, this an area of Birmingham with a high Muslim population.

I have no idea who has set this up, and haven't read the article, but I suspected that this was the reason when I read about it this morning.

Is this a private company or another crazy Birmingham City Council idea?

This story will enter the realm of the urban myth along with that nursery rhyme, Winterval and suggesting that council employees don't eat at their desks during Ramadan that anyone outside of Birmingham disputes ever happened... Well it was only a matter of time before someone brought them up, it may as well have been me! Wink

Birmingham must be the home of stupid-ideas-in-the-name-of-racial-harmony-that-quickly-get-dropped-before-they-reach-the-rest-of-the-country-because-they-are-fucking-ridiculous.

My dad's golf club has times when women are allowed to play, and women are not allowed in the main clubhouse, bet quite a few clubs are similar, but don't see that all over the DM.

Women are routinely discriminated against because they have had children, in the workplace, etc, the DM prints appalligly sexist stuff, but as soon as the shoe is on the other foot, nope, can't have that.

I think women only sessions would be a better idea, though.

WelshMaenad · 08/08/2012 11:28

What a load of ballsacks.

That said, I'd not be in a rush to take my DCs toa play centre surrounded by razor wire, regardless of their sexist T&Cs.

My gym (London) has female only swimming sessions several times a week. I turned up once for a Step class and there was a big notice saying that they were cancelling the ladies only swimming session because one of female lifeguards had gone home sick. They could run the session but there would have to be one male lifeguard on duty too (SHOCK, HORROR). The session did not run because this was unacceptable to the ladies. Well, fuck me. If they were drowning would they give a shit about the gender of the person that saved them?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 08/08/2012 11:45

They're opening up a new softplay about a mile away from the long-established and popular Hickory Dickory's, so I guess they needed a USP.
And they get free publicity in the Mail too. Win-win.

Olympia2012 · 08/08/2012 11:48

What's all this ' the ladies want to relax' stuff.... What are they scared men are going to actually see? As far as I'm aware you only need to remove your shoes.... And that's only if you go on the equipment

Prarieflower · 08/08/2012 11:50

What about SAHDs or families with boys and younger kids-awful.Don't know how they get away with it.Sounds like discrimination.
