When pregnant? I am 5+2 so being careful here. Seen mixed things on net.

What do you suggest? Will it hurt my baby/cause miscarriage?

Probably not.

Krumbum · 07/08/2012 21:23

Switch to decaff tea. Caffeine has been linked to a higher likelihood of miscarriage.

ShutTheFrontDoor · 07/08/2012 21:24

If its decaf you'll be fine. I switched when pregnant and never went back !

Trills · 07/08/2012 21:25

The NHS reckons 3 cups of tea is your limit, but also says "Don?t worry if you occasionally have more than the recommended limit, because the risks are quite small."

larks35 · 07/08/2012 21:26

You obviously aren't feeling too nauseous yet then! I think I could only manage one cup first thing early on. Other than that, I don't think I monitored myself really, just went with instinct.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 07/08/2012 21:26

www.nhs.uk/news/2008/11November/Pages/Newcaffeineadviceinpregnancy.aspx - I would switch to caffeine free or drink less tea

JumpingThroughHoops · 07/08/2012 21:29

Does it say on the packet?

PeshwariNaan · 07/08/2012 21:31

300 mg per day is the safe limit for pregnancy - a cup of black tea is 50mg if brewed to average strength, so you are probably just OK, but I'd try to cut down to 3 or fewer if I were you.

ohmysilverballs · 07/08/2012 21:34

I had at least six cups a day (mainly coffee) through all my pg, no-one even suggested this was bad until pg number three and I was a bit past worrying then.... (and all my kids sleep fine yes) ...

JumpingThroughHoops · 07/08/2012 21:35

I've never even heard tea of coffee is bad for pregnancy. What will they think of next?

LordOfThe5Rings · 07/08/2012 21:35

I tend to drink the same but other days not drink any... I have nausea myself but it comes in waves so if it's one of those times it's not playing up, I nip my food/tea in whilst it lets me :)

naturalbaby · 07/08/2012 21:36

'what will they think of next?' it's not a pie in the sky idea, it's a recommendation based on scientific research Hmm.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 07/08/2012 21:38

the limit has dropped to 200mg btw

Peevish · 07/08/2012 21:41

Given the choice between cutting down to the safe limit and drinking as much decaffeinated tea as a I liked, I chose the latter. (You can get quite good decaff tea now.) I was very careful in the first truimester, but fell off the wagon a bit in the final one.

Freshletticialongjump · 07/08/2012 21:42

How the hell can you stomach tea woman? I couldn't even look at it, never mind drink it.

AxlRosesLeatherTrousers · 07/08/2012 21:43

TBH I drink about 10 cups of tea a day (if not more) and carried on doing so through both my pregnancies. Figured I had to give up alcohol I wasn't giving up bloody caffeine as well!

I drank decaf at home and work and didn't worry about the odd cup when out and about. I still drink decaf - now need to wean off the evil that is diet coke, seems to be my dieting treat at the moment!

mangomadness · 07/08/2012 22:07

I drank decaff when pregnant, and had to stop drinking that on the orders of obstetrician. Yorkshire tea decaff is ok. Thing about caffeine is that it's in lots of things such as chocolate, which I also had to stop eating. But I have a heart condition and have to watch my caffeine intake. That first cup of proper tea in the labour suite after giving birth was the most amazing cup of tea ever. The previous 2 1/2 months without we're fine. Intact now I only have one 'real' cup a day, the rest is decaff.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 07/08/2012 22:10

It does depend on the strength with tea? I drink a lot but it's really really weak tea.

Pollykitten · 07/08/2012 22:12

Tea is lovely and good for you. Surrender your passport immediately if you think otherwise!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 07/08/2012 22:14

Only 20-30 mg in weak tea. If you can have 200 it's ok, strong tea was 80 mg.

NagooingForGold · 07/08/2012 22:14

I couldn't think abut boiling a kettle either Envy

I reckon I'd go decaff.

BartletForTeamGB · 07/08/2012 22:48

Redbush tea is great.
