to be thoroughly disappointed at the lack of Ralph Fiennes getting it on in The Reader?

Watched it last night on Sky +. The blurb was "drama about a man (Ralph Fiennes) who had an affair with a woman who, unknown to him, took part in the Holocaust. Nudity/Sex. Wahoo, I thought, another English Patient / End of the Affair. Without wanting to spoil it, nope, not my Ralph. No nudity / sex involving Ralph. I am thinking about complaining to advertising standards.....

He is a bit of a wet lettuce IMO. It would have been missionary position and him asking 'is this aright?' all the way through

redrubyshoes · 07/08/2012 15:08

I even fancy Ralph Fiennes in Schlinder's List. Blush

tittytittyhanghang · 07/08/2012 16:49

redruby, especially in Schindlers list Grin

The problem i have with the film of 'Schindler's List' is this: if you read 'Schindler's List' by Thomas Keneally & also read witness statements about Amon Goeth - you realise that the character played by Ralph Fiennes in the film 'Schindler's List' was not an accurate portrayal of Amon Goeth - he just looked similar to the real Amon Goeth.

If Ralph Fiennes had played Amon Goeth while he shot Jewish children at point blank range; fed men to his dogs; & shot his female office staff & abused boys - then you would definitely not be fancying him at all.

To be honest; if the film had shown the truth of what the SS did to Jews in Krakow & Plaszow - most people would not have been able to stomach the film.

I think though that the truth should have been shown, sorry.
Not sanitised to become palatable for a mass audience.
And definitely shot in colour - not black & white, which IMO just made the whole film seem unrealistic.

As for 'The Reader' - the book was shite; i got angry & couldn't finish it; so definitely avoided the film.

Hmmm, maybe this is not a thread i should be reading!

oooh hes a meanie in it, but ooooffft, something just smouldering about him in it.

Latara

I have read the book Schindler's Ark to give it the correct title.

FartyMcTarty · 09/08/2012 09:46

YABU. The book focuses on the woman's affair with a much younger man.

yellowbottle · 09/08/2012 13:33

Yeah, and she feckin does have an affair with a much younger man, much much younger. I spent the film watching awkward sex scenes with an almost pre-pubescent boy, almost willing her to get off, not because she should, but because there may be reunion sex with Mr. Fiennes, but no, nada.

'Schindler's Ark' was reissued as 'Schindler's List' when the film came out; i was made to see the film on a school trip; & bought the book afterwards.

I found the film shocking; until i read the book.

As a teenager the only Holocaust literature i'd read was the Diary of Anne Frank so i was horrified by the violent atrocities in the book 'Schindler's List' - i was also naive enough to be surprised that the film didn't show the actual truth.

Recently i read William Schiff's account of Amon Goeth in Plaszow - including how Goeth shot his young cousin in front of her mother.

Sorry - Ralph Fiennes is a good looking bloke, but it's just weird to find his portrayal of Amon Goeth attractive.

YABU he man is hideous and slimy, remember when he joined the mile club. Yuck. I wouldn't shag him for anything, even loads of money.

Great film though. Although when I went to see it there was a guy wanking in the early parts.

I do love Kate Winslet and her moral dilemma films, Little Children, Hideous Kinky etc.

The Reader is such an emotionally draining film to watch. It is almost compelling you to feel sorry for Hana, Kate Winsletts character and I just couldn't. I too have read Schindlers Ark for my A levels and agree that the portrayal of Amon Goeth in the film has a much lighter touch. Difficult, difficult book, first hand accounts of what happened and a miracle it ever got written.

OatyBeatie · 09/08/2012 17:11

I'm not sure that the film sanitised the portrayal of the holocaust present in the book. On the contrary, I think that in the film Goth was made physically attractive and conspicuously cultured (at least in some respects) in order to heighten, not diminish, the sense of atrocity. By portraying him in that way, the film used him as an image of Germany itself -- and advanced, culturally accomplished nation, historically full of massive intellectual and aesthetic achievement. There is a scene in the film, I think, during the clearing of the Ghetto were a Nazi soldier sits down and plays a piece of German classical music on a piano he finds. That a nation so accomplished, so cultured, produced the holocaust is an additional source of horror, which the film compellingly conveyed. In that respect the film challenged us more thoroughly than it would otherwise have done.

Kate and Leo in Revolutionary Road - now that was a depressing film.
