To not want to go to my 6 week check and especially to not want to have to take my ds with me?

I'm fed up. And tired.

I don't really see the point in the 6 week check. If I had a prolem I would see the gp or the hv. I feel fine (apart from exhausted due to sleepless nights which is a given) and ds is fine. He saw the hv last week.

So what is the point of me dragging myself to the gp for a 6 week check??

The only reason I can see is to go back on the pill but I don't need ds to do that. I rang and asked gp if I need to bring ds and they say yes. (Dh is at home today so I could have left ds with him).

So convince me.. What are they going to do at the 6 week check? Why is it so important?

It sounds like you are doing loads, maybe too much? Remember if you had a section like I did, you would only just about be allowed to drive. Take care of yourself and don't feel like staying at home and not doing loads is wrong.

Where I live it is a 6 week check for Mum and 8 week for baby, but the GP did both of ours together. As you are already 2 weeks late it is more than likely that they will be doing both of you.

They will check lots of things on your baby- heart, hips, position of creases in legs etc.

It won't take long and you might even find that getting out of the house for a bit to be a bit of a pick me up. I know it is hideous feeling so tired all of the time but a bit of fresh air and a change of scenery might make you feel a bit more human. Is the surgery close? Could you walk there? Might wear the kids out enough for you to get in a nap this afternoon...

Sorry OP, just seen your post about getting out a lot. You do sound like you are doing a lot. Is there someone who could help out with DD so you could just rest with the LO? Grandparents?

I know it doesn't feel like it now, but it will get easier soon.

I had checks for me and for DC's separately and I preferred it like that.
I think it's quite nice for your GP to ask you at 6 week stage how things are going, acknowledge that your body's just been through something amazing and challenging, and ask how you are.

If you'd prefer to have a check-up for yourself separately you could ask for that, and leave DS with DH today ? It might do you good to have 5 mins with Dr on your own, just saying how things are going ? Then another appt on another day for check up for DS ?

Maybe it's just me but, especially in the early days, I found doing too many things all at the same time, a stressy hassle !

Hey, and congratulations BTW Smile

I never went to one with my three youngest. Having suffered through the monumentally disorganised chaos at the GPs surgery with my older two I just couldn't face it again. Like you said, had there been anything wrong I would have made an appointment with the right person for myself.

AThingInYourLife · 07/08/2012 10:18

I was told that my 6 week check was for me and that I didn't have to bring the baby.

Mine is tomorrow (DD3 6 weeks on Friday).

TerracottaPie · 07/08/2012 10:24

Our surgery does everything at 8 weeks specifically to avoid Mum having to go twice (for her check up and then for baby's). They also do the 8 week vaccinations then too. I'm sure the receptionist love trying to coordinate the 3 appointments!

Won't you be having to go anyway for his jabs?

justintimefortea · 07/08/2012 10:39

The problem is you are going to places that absolutely should be baby friendly but absolutely are not baby friendly... This country is utterly frustrating for people with young families - shitty horrible changing facilities (usually none), no facilities to make up feeds as recommended, tutting arseholes if your baby is not fast asleep like on the telly, shit weather....

I think the school hols are getting to you OP... If dh is off I would have him sort out the older dc then go for six week check and take baby visiting to a friends...

As for feeds... You know about taking a flask of boiling water out and formula in a pot? The flask will keep water above 70c for most of day... U prob know this tho x x x

They do seperate appointments here for 6 week check (mum), 8 week check first with HV then GP (babies) and immunisations. You can imagine how chuffed I was to have to attend 4 different appointments with my twins. Much better if it could all be done together.

melliebobs · 07/08/2012 10:49

Considering I had a emsc and complications afterwards my 6 week check was a waste of time

Scar wasn't checked
Bp not checked
Told I didn't need contraception
Told the dizzy spells, blurred vision n night sweats was down to fatigue n that was that

If u ain't up for it don't go. But ur babies checks important. But where I live it's not till 8 weeks when they have their jabs
