Hi, some of you may remember me,we were homeless and now are lucky enough to have a lovely home on a supposed bad estate. My eldest has been invited on a holiday abroad with friends. I cannot afford the nearly
£50 it is for her passport. I had to tell her r

That I can't even afford to get her a new passport let alone save spending money

OP posts:
StunningCunt · 07/08/2012 00:26

How old is she? Can she not a get a paper round or similar and save up for it?

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:29

What do you want to know exactly?

Are you unreasonable for not being able to afford something?

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 00:32

Sorry, my AIBH is she should be happy that we have a home.sorry.

OP posts:
MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 00:34

And. She should not expect the world handed to her.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:35

I'm sure she is, but that's never going to stop her from wanting to do things that you can't afford.

Lots of people are in the same boat...just reassure her that we can't all have what we want, no matter how much money we do or don't have.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:35

Confused not really, this is so lacking in subtlety OP

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:37

Ohh right TQOD was I supposed to offer the £50? Blush

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 00:43

Sorry for lacking subtely, but I am a regular here and was in no way asking for money.I will ask for it to removed as I obviously worded it complety wrongly.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:44

[Grin]

I thought passports were more than £50 anyway? I'm sure my parents paid more for mine at 14 and that was 8 years ago.

Also, Who is paying for the actual holiday and when is it?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:45

Don't remove things on account of my nasty sense of humour.

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 00:47

passport is £49 for a child. The other family is paying for the holiday. I would obviously like to send her with some spending money.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:51

Oh right, how far away is the holiday?
If it were me I'd get the passport, and then put money away each week for spending :)

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 00:51

Well you can't

I don't know how old your child is, but honestly it does strengthen their character to learn these things early on.

We all have to say "Nope, sorry can't afford that" at times...it's part of life.

Actually, I really wouldn't want to be around a child, teenager or adult who has never been told "No, sorry" at some points in their lives.

HerRoyalNotness · 07/08/2012 00:52

If I win the lotto on Friday, I will send you the money for you all to have passports and a holiday!

In the meantime, can you put aside a few pounds a week and maybe by next year you'd have enough saved for your DD, if her friends are so kind as to offer again?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 00:54

HerRoyalNotness - My OH said you won't because he's taking 146mil tomorrow like he says every week

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 00:56

Thank youm I have said no, as there is no way I can do it without getting into debt. She will just have to suck it up! I am sorry if people thought I was after money?

OP posts:
HerRoyalNotness · 07/08/2012 00:58

Aha, I'm in a different country so I totally could dreams aren't free

StunningCunt · 07/08/2012 01:01

Can she not save up herself?

It takes weeks to get a passport, if she's old enough to go away with friends, she's surely old enough to make the money herself?

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 01:13

She is 12, there is nowhere locally that will employ her. I have told her no, just wanted to see if I was being unreasonable but I turned out to be a liar! ...

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 07/08/2012 01:22

When is the holiday?
For a 12 year old they're not going to need tons of spending money.

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 01:28

StunningCunt · 07/08/2012 01:32

Well if she's 12 she can't legally work anyway.

MyCupsRunnethOver · 07/08/2012 02:02

I am truly sorry for starting this thread.I never thought it would be construed as a begging message.. I apologise.

OP posts:
HerRoyalNotness · 07/08/2012 02:08

Don't worry about starting th thread and know its not unreasonable to say no. If you can't afford it, you can't! But this is a great opportunity to talk to her about saving up for things. Does she get birthday/Xmas money from relatives? Maybe if she saves that you could try to match it, for next year. Of course she might not be offered again, but you never know, and if not, just keeping adding to her savings and have a day out with it
