I've been a regular (once a week) Sainsburys online grocery shopper for about two years now. Until recently they've been brilliant, no complaints. However the past two months or so, every time I get my delivery, there's at least one item in there with a 'use by' date for that day. I'm talking about fresh meat, ready meals, veg/fruit etc. Today there were two items, last week it was 3 items.
Yes, I know I can freeze some of this stuff. I also know that I can more than likely eat whatever it is after the 'use by' date and not get food poisoning. And I know I can refuse them and get a refund. (Not helpful when I've done my meal plan for the week). That's not the point.
I am wondering if the store manager has now adopted a policy of telling the home delivery order pickers to select the shortest dated products. If those items were still on the shelf in store, they'd be getting yellow stickered with considerable reductions. Because they're sending them out with deliveries, they're not reduced, so the customers are paying full price. Seems like a crafty way to maximise profits to me.
