To be feeling cynical about Sainsburys grocery deliveries..

I've been a regular (once a week) Sainsburys online grocery shopper for about two years now. Until recently they've been brilliant, no complaints. However the past two months or so, every time I get my delivery, there's at least one item in there with a 'use by' date for that day. I'm talking about fresh meat, ready meals, veg/fruit etc. Today there were two items, last week it was 3 items.

Yes, I know I can freeze some of this stuff. I also know that I can more than likely eat whatever it is after the 'use by' date and not get food poisoning. And I know I can refuse them and get a refund. (Not helpful when I've done my meal plan for the week). That's not the point.

I am wondering if the store manager has now adopted a policy of telling the home delivery order pickers to select the shortest dated products. If those items were still on the shelf in store, they'd be getting yellow stickered with considerable reductions. Because they're sending them out with deliveries, they're not reduced, so the customers are paying full price. Seems like a crafty way to maximise profits to me.

YANBU, this is the only reason I've never used any supermarket's online delivery as I suspect they would give me all the short dates and manky looking fruit and veg.

I had this a couple of times. Phoned and complained. They refunded the items, I kept and froze them. The manager was informed. Didn't happen again.

I do always check use by dates when the shopping arrives though and send stuff back if it's out of date in a couple of days. I then write a note on the delivery to remind them.

I think it depends on who does the shopping in store.

Also they are meant to separate items with a shorter shelf life.

I had some strawberries and raspberries on short date that weren't of the quality I'd choose for myself, I emailed and they refunded me twice the value of the goods. This is why I don't often shop online though, I prefer choosing things for myself and matching use bys against my meal plan.

I don't think it's deliberate, I love Sainsbugs but they are often OOS of things I want, their stock management approach seems a bit haphazard!

Thanks LAlady, I'm going to phone them. I understand that this can happen once in a while, but as I said it's been every delivery lately.

I'm a bit pissed off about this.
Will update when I've spoken to them.

This has been happening to us recently as well.... hmmm.... perhaps I should call.

pimmsgalore · 06/08/2012 18:49

right I am calling them next time as i got 3 loaves of bread that were all use by that day and as DD put them on the freezer rather than in the freezer because she couldn't be arsed to put them away properly they were green with mould the next day when I went to take a couple of slices out
